Might I also suggest taking them in to (if you have them) your kid's school and having a teacher hand out one to each student when they are studying about buffaloes/bison? I did that at my kid's school (in MD) with a roll of Canadian nickels. The teacher handed out the coins in geography class when they were studying our Northern Neighbors. The kids had never seen a nickel with a beaver on the REV and absolutely LOVED them. |

In the spirit of the holidays and NJ Bob, I decided to liberate some 20th century IHCs. So far, I've snuck them into a couple of Salvation Army buckets, several store transactions, and several tips left on restaurant tables. The only time anyone noticed was at a Starbucks at DFW airport. The barista said "I'm sorry, these are foreign coins," and gave them back to me! I said, "Actually, they are real American pennies from around 1900." He looked skeptical, but accepted them. I hope he went home and did a bit of Googling that night.  Happy holidays! |

When I was much younger I worked for Pepsi while my Brother worked for Coke. We were also roommates at the time. Since he did the grocery shopping, because I was lazy, he would only buy Diet Coke. I only drink Diet Coke to this day.
Great idea NJ Bob. I have a few dateless and dated Buffs I found roll hunting. I'm going to attempt to get them back into the wild under your original rules. I don't normally pay with change. I like to get the change back so I can search it. This should be fun.

I have recently done the same thing, only with duplicate Liberty 5 cents.
Common dates like 04, 07, 11 etc...I slip in the coin cup by the register.
I know I'm crazy, some times I just leave on counter by register for the next person to find.
I have a roll of duplicate Buffs and will be "spreading the word" about coin collecting.

I think when you do stuff like this, you end up really making someone's day.
I would imagine will spur a lot of holiday conversation and maybe bring someone into
this great pastime. Great idea, to bad I gave all my dateless buff's to my nieces and nephews.

I never realized how hard it is to spend nickels. I thought this was going to be easy but I don't use cash all that often and setting my Buffalo nickels free is a real challenge. I have however had some successes. (My goal is to get the cashier to drop them in the cash drawer without noticing.) 12/16 - I bought food for my parrots at the pet store and was able to sneak one into the change when I paid and the cashier didn't catch on.  12/19 - I bought a candy bar at the newsstand in the lobby of the building I work at. The cashier had no clue. Oh yeah, I also bought a Coke (yeah I said it  ) using a Buffalo nickel and it tasted even better than it usually does. The bottom line is that I'm having a lot of fun and I think I'm going to do this every year. |

Rather than sneaking them into a payment, I would rather make it easy for the clerk or whomever to see them as it'd be fun to note all the different responses.
I wonder how many of them that make it into a cashier's till make it back out into the world as change themselves.

I agree it is fun to see people's reactions when they catch on but I'd rather have them notice it in the cash drawer or in change and have no idea how it got there. It's all good. |
