I have a bad feeling about this coin; however, I would have liked an explanation from the "experts". The first remark I received on the other site seems typical from that particular poster. There are a few over there with that attitude, but definitely not all. Some of the most knowledgeable Ancients collectors hang out there and most seem willing to share their knowledge. So don't judge the whole by the few.

I would also add that there is no site better than here on CCF, especially for the comraderie!

Yes, you are correct. Sometimes I cringe at remarks made to new members/collectors who have made honest inquiries only to be "sneared" at through the remarks. But still, many are good natured and give thourough advice.

Well I am following your thread there and one of there "experts" says the crack and the material is was what looks modern, but again he did not elaborate, as to why. There does appear to be corrosion in the crack and the crack is clean, through the coin, inconsistent with a spread from pressing the piece. I'd rather not argue with him. Good luck.

Bing. As for that "first remark" (irritating I must say), I guess that it is due to the fact that it is a commercial site and that several members consign their coins there (I still have a few ). Some of them feel that they must "direct the traffic" I guess

--the camraderie here on CCF is how it should be everywhere--you guys are great! Sadly, there are plenty of hobby/expertise forums which have a sort of two-tier membership going on between the experts and those who want to learn more, who seldom find that satisfaction. I've always felt that education should be free because it empowers people to make quality decisions. To their credit, many knowledgeable collectors here on CCF are very generous to provide interesting history and expertise on specific coins series. This benefits beginners like myself to make good purchases, raise awareness of fakes (for specific reasons), and reduces the need to ask the same questions over and over. Seeing the group of coins posted by Dionysos--they all have my suspicions too. They look too crude, and the style of the crudity is similar across diverse types.

Curious how did you ever make out on this piece? Did you ever receive it? I would love to see your improved pictures.

I received it about a week and a half ago. Sadly, it looked worse in hand, and when tested, it came back negative for silver content. I contacted the seller and told him I thought it might be fake. He graciously said that if I were unhappy he would refund my money and I could return the coin. In fact, he refunded my money immediately before I could even ship the coin. All turned out fine for me except I still like that design and am looking for another. Thanks for asking.

Interesting....now in my opinion this was a good fake. Even down to the corrosion in the crack based on the original pictures. I guess photos make all the difference. I am surprised you didn't share your findings. How did you test it for silver, did you use D=m/v or another method?

Sorry to hear about the coin Bing. I think I recognize the seller from tbe photo style. He's in central Asia right? I was tempted to bid on a silver coin of Witiges he had but was convinced not to by a friend of mine. Style was off and the location made me uneasy. But since he refunded you quickly like that, he might be one of the honest sellers that simply gets duped by fake coins?

I used a silver test kit I bought on-line. It consists of a bottle of some chemical and a rubbing stone. If the stone turns red when the chemical is applied at the rubbing point, then it is silver. The deeper the red, the more the silver content. In this case, there was no color change. Sorry I did not post about this. I'm always slightly embarrassed when I fall for a fake.
