The coins are not remints. I contacted the dealer in Germany and was assured they weren't remints but from existing stock of coins.

I like the set and presentation... problem is I already started to collect the older dates and was enjoying the hunt for the coins (hate hate hate to use that word especially since the word "elephant is being used here)on ebay and other dealers. So I mean, I dont know if I am going to get this set. It is a great looking set. Tho seeing APMEX is dropping the price on it (tho ebay has lower prices) makes me wonder if demand will be low for it.

I think APMEX is just trying to undercut the ebay sellers. The sets are selling pretty well if you look at the buyer stats on ebay. To me it's more fun to build your own set. It may be less expensive as well.

Well I dont know about if APMEX is doing it for that reason. With their sheer size, margins and good name and reputation they get the most out of their dollars. For that reason I dont think they are discounting the set because they want to tear into ebay sales but rather its not a fast mover for them. Its the same with the 2013 high relief elephant coin. Beautiful coin, I have held one in my hand. However, look at APMEX. They slashed the price on this one, after being one of the higher prices, as they usually are. BUT, I feel again, they are slashing prices to move this product faster and out of their inventory because it was not a great steady seller. I mean really, if APMEX had these coins selling like hot coins, they would not be slashing prices, simple. Its all about supply and demand as always. Dont get me wrong, to me, ALL Somalia elephant coins are worth owning and having in your collection. But its clear some coins are more popular than others in this series. Finally, I am kinda hanging back, bidding time, I would rather wait for silver and gold to dump before making a move here. I could be wrong but price is telling me we will see lower prices than we are seeing right now.

I know where you're coming from yup7676. And I think you're right to some degree. We are seeing prices of the 2004-2008 years going up. Even the prices of coins that aren't being minted any more (2009-2012) are increasing in value.
In my opinion the best Elephants to buy are the BU coins. Look at the prices of the older coins sometimes the BU coins sell more than the gilded or colored. Food for thought.

hey nice job guys of posting deals. Yellow has a nice price there too, thats really nice.
And Purple, I agree with you and I notice that. I really think, these Somalia elephants are the best bullion coins to buy, their low mintage's for now give you a big cushion.
I would imagine someday they'll get them to mintage numbers like the Pandas. Which for I mean, the Pandas are toast, their best days are in the rear view mirror.

The big retailers are asking almost the same price for 2013 Elephants as the are for 2013 Pandas. And their asking substantially more for earlier year Elephants do to the low mintage numbers. I believe APMEX is selling slabbed 2014 NGC 70 Elephants for close to $83. That's a good bit more than a similar Panda. 2013 NGC 70 Pandas are selling on ebay for less than $60. They'll mint as many 2014 as possible. My guess it'll be around a half million. But I'm just guessing. It also means it might be a good idea to buy a high relief or gilded Elephant because there mintage will be fixed at a very low number. 5000 each of the colored and gilded and 1000 high reliefs. You also have the Day and Night set with only 500 sets produces. I see the higher mintage numbers as a good thing. More people become aware and interested in the series. And in the grand scope of things earlier Elephants go up in value. Prices of sold Elephants on ebay are increasing already since the 2014s are out. A few 2005 have sold close to $190. It won't be long till the $200 mark is broken.

Here's some information I got from one of the German Mint's authorized dealer:
"Regarding of the Elephant mintages of previous years please see below: 2004 20,000 pcs 2005 20,000 pcs 2006 20,000 pcs 2007 20,000 pcs 2008 20,000 pcs With the year 2009 mint changed the typical mintage to a solely bullion product and so they have no minting limits. Since then every year the mintage has been stopped at December 31 and started with the new year on January 1."
May be other members can email/ask other dealers to see if they can verify/confirm such mintage number. Let us unlock the mystery....
