BEKIZZZZZ where the heck you been at?!?!?!? You are always dropping knowledge about these type coins, especially new ones when they are issued....

Now that gold continues to run higher I am feeling sooooo gooood about getting gold somalian elephant coins. I wonder tho, if I should continue non-slabbed or go for the slabs, like I am OK with PF69, I guess just the slab looks nice for gold.

Too bad I cant find a case to get and put a 1 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/50 oz and 1/25 oz and half gram elephants all together, thats one of my goals now to get going on and finish.

Yup,

You should really look into the Somali Gold Proof Set. Still ungraded, but they are encapsulated and quite a nice finish, far better than BU. Haven't seen the 2016 set, but then I like the 2015 elephant design better than most of the years I've seen.

Yes, it is a lot of money, but Proof sets are likely to escalate well about the spot price of gold. My opinion.

Hey there Andrew!

Is this set only available from APMEX, thats the only place I saw it and they tend to reallllly be heavy on their mark up for those type offerings .

I do like proof coins over bullion dont get me wrong and yes, it has been my experience, that when the metals were higher, proof coins were even higher.. at least in what I was buying.

i have been waiting a while to get the gold elephants lol

Yup,

I have seen the Silver and Gold at APMEX, but I bought the 2013 Silver set from 'Majestic Coins LTD'. But I know a couple guys who are account reps for coin dealers, I will ask if they know where to find the Gold Somalia (other than APMEX). For some reason, they seem to like talking to me; far longer than is usual than just making sales.

Yup,

Just ran across this article in the AgAu News:

in 2015, the Bavarian Mint apparently minted a 1/25 oz and 1/50 oz gold Somali. That sounds like something you should be looking for small size gold coins, but proof exclusively. But very low mintage (which appeals to me). And I do really like the 2015 elephant.

If you find any of these coins for sale, let ME know.

Be warned: the AgAu news has some really bizarre coins described.

http://agaunews.com/gold-somali-ele...ullion-coin/

A HIT ON the 2015 1/50 OZ Gold: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/SOMALIA-GOLD...AOSw3xJVeQmY

-------------------
And a 2015 mint mistake I may or not have mentioned: http://www.thecoinvault.com/p-4387-...GC-ms69.aspx

So if you buy the silver, you also get a slight 'hint' of gold designation due to the mis-strike, because they used the gold reverse die to a silver blank, then restruck again using the correct silver reverse die.

Hey Andrew!

I have seen those to come to think of it, I been really bogged down here workwise but I believe I did save some of those auctions.

I am going to check my ebay. I will certainly let you know as these come up, are you looking for auctions or buy it now? I know I have seen these now that I think of it for a second because I been looking to see who else besides two dealers on ebay get somalian gold elephants.

I been really busy so I havent been able to sit down and decide who to give my biz too for the 1/10 and 1 oz somalian elephants.

I am enticed to grab the privy WMF elephant seeing theres auctions for them. I havent even bought a single somalian elephant coin for 2016 yet lol

I do remember you mentioning the error coin, that is pretty neat, if one ever comes up for auction on ebay, I remember somewhere in this thread you mentioned one dealer getting some before they were thrown out was it?.... but that certainly sounds intriguing.

A while back, I mentioned the Somali Silver 1oz 'Privy' coins for 2012-2015, which had mintages between only 10K and 3K. Each privy is for the lunar year (Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat or Ram).

I've noticed a big price spike on the 'Privy' Somalis for 2012. The limited mintage coins for 2012 (first privy year) seem to have doubled in price. Initially, I think they were about 150% more than than the regular 1oz silver. Now they seem to be about 300% costlier.

But the 2015 Ram Privy pricing is all over the place to (not avaiable to only costing $35. Not much logic since they only struck 3K of these...

Andrew, have you seen they are having ebay auctions for the various somalian elephant coin sizes except for the 1 oz gold elephant, these have been for 2016,, havent seen for 2015.

I also want to say the 2016 somalian elephant gold 1 oz coin is a thing of beauty. Too many people I think been harsh just because the image is basically opposite of a previous year.

Heck, its an elephant, no matter what, they always look great, especially in gold lol

Yup,

Really haven't. I don't like ebay and like auctions even less so. Usually the pricing is driven by emotions, not common sense. I know you love your BU gold Somalias, but I really don't like any gold coin unless it is proof, preferably PF70 proof. If I'm gonna overpay, it has to be for a special coin, since the Gold-Silver-Ration GSR) is skewed out of whack: about 80:1 at present, I believe. So buying gold (vice silver) is a poor option, in my opinion, since the ratio of gold to silver in the crust (mining-wise) is about 18:1 or 20:0. So silver must be underpriced and gold is dramatically overpriced (probably some of both). But that is just me; buy what you like to have. Key thing is to do what makes you happy.

I do have several BU 2016 silver bullion Somalis and several 2016 MS70 ER silver Somalis. That is a pattern I follow for a number of US and world coins. And if the Proof is nice (some aren't), I'll buy the proofs, also.

So I been on a binge here and have pretty much collected all the Bav mint issued coins in this series except for a few items which, unless I can get them at auction will pass

I am ASTONISHED at how the 2016 1/10 ounce somalian elephant gold coin sold out. Man, APMEX had them when they came out and other dealers on ebay.

Then APMEX sold out. Then other dealers did on ebay, with a few German dealers carrying some stock.

Then APMEX a week ago restocked the 1/10 ounce piece gold coin and like I say in about 5 days it was sold out again.

Boy, I didnt think there would be such a stampede for these. Glad I got one, not a fan of small gold coins. To me, the bigger the gold coin the better.

Anyways, super how I am almost caught up with my 2016 collection of elephants. Now if silver can get its butt going higher and I would jump on a roll of elephants and a kilo elephant coin. we will see.

If you havent bought yourself a gold or silver somalian elephant, you are missing out.

Montana,

If you buy a coin and it has milk spots (I've had a few), a reputable coin dealer will almost always offer to replace it. So don't be timid about going back to the seller.

So it appears that APMEX has almost cornered the market on the Somalia Elephant Fractional proof 4-coin sets. I see the Silver 2016 set for sale from them (mintage 2000 sets). They have the Gold Proof listed, but as 'out of stock', which makes sense since they only did a tiny 300 sets.

But they also have the 1 oz Gold PF-69 2016.

And APMEX also has the 1/25 oz gold BU AND the 1/2 gram gold BU. First time I've seen the Somali in grams vice oz. But the 1/2 gram is only 11mm in diameter. I may have to get new glasses or a really good magnifier just to even look at the details.

@MontanaCMR

I am sorry to hear that. boy thanks for making me feel bad lol. Then again I dont. Like Andrew says, most dealers will take it back.

I really dont mind milk spots. Everything gets them, (most bullion will/can just the risk you take if you are a collector and want perfection) even Pandas. I have some somalian elephants that are silver with milk spots and without.

Since these are bullion, I am not worried about it. They are still beautiful to me.

Andrew, yes looks like APMEX is pretty much the biggest place to find your elephants.

I will not buy their proof set.

I have a simple rule- if I cannot buy the coin at auction from a reputable dealer on ebay, then the coin is over priced and not worth it. If its a bullion coin, I will buy it since I can value it with the moving spot prices.

Therefore to me that gold proof set is a waste of my money and way over priced. I like it but rules are rules and I stick them. I also like that ANA gold coin they have but its way over priced. Same with the silver ANA privy mark.

Unless those coins come up for auction I certainly am not paying for them.

Ha Yup, no regrets in buying the coin, but like Maples, won't add anymore. Only my maples and elephant coins have ever milk spotted. However, I did take a bit of a risk buying a bunch of those new Perth Kangaroos. I have heard they develop spots as well.
