time to bump this up...

Recently on ebay, I discovered that now you can get a 1 oz somalia silver elephant in Platinum.

I am game and its interesting but I would only buy if they came up for auction.

I hate to say it, but I am very disappointed with the 2017 design. I have enjoyed this series, last year I made an almost entire run of their offerings but I sadly have to jump off the elephant train this year.

The design looks too cartoonish and like someone said on a youtube video, the elephant looks like Dumbo. I guess the mint behind these has gotten fat and sassy and feels they can keep cranking them out, with no one saying anything or catching on to their sloppy design this year.

While I love the idea of various fractional sizes in both gold and silver (I would have gladly bought all the sizes in both gold and silver) and was very excited when they came out, all that excitement has died down for me with this recent design.

Sadly, I will be sitting out this years somalian elephant series and I hope they go back to the beauty of these coins.

Bavarian Mint and JM Bullion, who is distributing these, ARE YOU LISTENING? The design this year is a joke and really brings down the entire series.

I read this thread many times over while plugging away at my set of elephants these past few years and it's finally finished.

Thanks yup7676!

WOW DEBRA!! Look at you, what a beautiful creation, love the two series of elephants, very impressive collection!

how long did it take you to collect all these, you said a few years so about 2 years time? How do you feel about the 2017 elephant?

I am happy that this thread motivated you to collect the elephants and that you enjoyed the journey and you have accomplished a lot in these two series.

again congrats on your two sets! Now you need some gold and kilo elephants, trust me you will LOVE them as well!

That is awesome. Congrats. I like the case you have for them as well with the elephant silk screening. Where did you find that case?

Awwww thanks everybody!

@mr1030 I ordered the Kookabura, Wildlife (Rwanda), and Elephant boxes from Germany.
Here is the link to the Elephant box: http://dios111-preciouscoins.com/products/4/14/

@yup7676 I have been working on my world bullion collection since 2012.
The elephants took about 2 - 3 years but I had many series going at the same time.
And yes, they did a pitiful job on this years coin. I am hoping for 2018 we get a MUCH nicer one.

I would love to branch out into gold and kilos but I still have some 1 oz. silver coins I need
for other sets and the budget is only so big. Anybody have a Somalia Monkey...2002?

Thanks for the nice words...all of you!

@Debrajc

hey thats not tooo shabby of a time period to get that done, especially seeing that some of these early ones command a pretty good premium. Hopefully they do a better job going forward, sadly I am sitting out the elephants this year, I was excited too because last year was the first 1/10 bullion coin.

best wishes going forward on keeping up with the elephants!

Wow!! Debrajc that is most impressive!!

What a beautiful set!

I can't type enough to express how cool it is to have both sets complete.

And those Zambia ones are beautiful. In those rare times I ever see those for sale, the examples are never as nice as yours.

One question on the boxes from the website. I notice the elephants has 20 holes and the Rwanda has 12 holes. Is the Rwanda only designed for 12 years instead of ongoing? I was just curious is there was a reason for the 12 vs. 20.

@mkman - APMEX has a great inventory of these older coins but they are high retail. The only ones I paid over $100 for in the Zambia series was the 1999 and the 2003. I was patient and it took a long time to find nice examples as well as prices I wanted to pay. The 2004 - 2009 Somalia coins were limited to a max of 5,000 per coin and those are high as well. But I finally succeeded and am happy to have the series complete.

@yup7676 - Thanks again for all your kind words. I really enjoy this thread and thought others might like to see a shot or two of all the elephants together. I may re address the 1/10 oz. bullion gold series someday since last year was the first. We'll see!

@crazyglue - Thanks so much! I know you and I are both really into silver bullion series coins. I do plan a thread someday to share our passion!
As far as the Rwanda boxes.....back when I bought mine he offered an option of the left side with the 12 "holes" and the right side with "boxes" or both sides as "boxes". I know you collected the BEAUTIFUL proofs (where as mine are all blister BU's) so that set up might work for you. Even better if he could supply both sides as 12 holes but that's probably not an option. I considered the holes on one side and boxes on the other side set up as the Rwanda Lunar series had just started and I though about doing those in the proof version but I changed my mind at the last minute and went with the all box option.

But the coins only get into boxes on picture day. They stay locked up at the bank and I keep the boxes here as they take up too much room. Wish we lived in an environment where I could just keep things like this at home with me but we don't. Plus living in Florida and seeing first hand how awful Hurricane Andrew was I think my babies are much safer in the bank vault rather than my home.

Thanks again for all the kind words! It is a fun series.
