I just started collecting elephants this month. So far I only have some 2011s and 2013s, plus several high relief 2013 on the way (these look great in the photos).

I see these are going for around $40 on ebay, know of any other lower prices? Are the prices usually lower when they first come out or later into the year that they come out?

@Stud hey did you see all the neat new stuff they got for the elephants on ebay?!?!?! anyways, I would give it a bit before you buy the bullion ones I think prices go lower with silver going lower. However, I am seeing more and more interest in these coins. I think these coins will be more valulable and more desired in the coming years over Libertads AND pandas. more later

Just wanted to pass on some very exciting and notable items that are available now - APMEX is carrying Somalian 2014 1 oz gold coins, 2014 Kilo sized coins (silver). These two items seem to carry a nice premium over the long term and I'd say they have come down in price compared to last years issue, since they are bullion. However, it seems like previous issues have absorbed the drops in metal prices. I think putting some money into these Somalian coins would be a good investment. However, I wouldn't buy around these levels yet. I think silver and gold come in more and you can scoop up some deals. Finally, cant help think that APMEX has a such a big inventory of the Somalia elephants because demand is outstripping supply. You might recall I was told on the phone they were closing them out because they were only "rounds" which is incorrect. I think APMEX did a 180 on these coins because again, demand is strong. Naturally, not all the coins are desired in this series but its clear watching the price of these coins gives us big clues as to which ones are highly desired. I wouldn't be surprised they read the forums, such as this one to decide what they will carry lol Also, did you notice, besides the 2014 pre-orders, you can now also pre-order the 2014 Somalia gilded coin AND there is pre-order going for a limited edition 500 max set featuring the colored versions of the 2014 but what they did this year is feature like a dawn and dusk coin. Comes in a case with COA. Looks very nice, I guess it celebrates the anniversary of the elephant line. I do think also these gilded and colored Somalia elephant coins also carry a premium over time and they are worth putting away as investment. I'll say it again, the Somalia elephant coins are much better than Mexican Libertads and even the China pandas going forward.

Some information (I did my thesis on the UN Intervention, and have researched /am colecting the series)
There are two major powers within Somalia at the moment hsing the.prkduction of coins as a method of legitimizing their claim. The Somali Republic is larger in terms of influence. The other is Somaliland, which consists primarily of the capital city, Mogadishu. Somaliland has a contract with a german mint as well to produce a series of zodiac coins. I believe those started in 2010.
So this appears to be a western power taking advantage of tribal/warlord fracturing, and as a result, we get this intriguing coin series.
Realistically, does it matter? A US Eagle has a $1 FV, but if a catastrophe which collapses occurs, who will back them? I fail to see how the FV demands a premium. The Maple dominates the Eagle with a $5 FV anyway.
I am collecting one of each Elephant, and I will vrab a tube if available for.bullion.

Thanks for all the great info yup7676. I share your passion for the Somalia Elephants.
I ordered the two coin Day and Night limited edition set you mentioned in a prior post. I should have it in hand in about 5-7 days. The Night coin can be purchased separaretly but purchasing this set is the only way to get the Day coin. And there's only 500 sets.
I know colored coins aren't to every ones taste but I enjoyed the colorized China Pandas I have owned and the colored Elephants look to be even better executed. BTW the 1996,1997,1998 colorized China Pandas were colorized by a German company
I am very interested how the set performs price wise on the secondary market. My Somalia Elephants have outperformed all my other semi-numis.
I found it interesting that all the coins in the Somalia Elephant series have a proof finish accept one. The 2004 has a different finish than all the others. At first I thought the coin I had purchased had experienced toning. Then I purchased a second 2004. Both coins have the same finish.

Canada Toronto Gold Bullion has 2014 Elephants for CAD $28.72 each. Delivery will cost a flat rate of $35 across Canada and the United States or if you spend $4500 or more it's free. Not a bad price on 2014s. Modern Coin Mart and APMEX just raised their prices on the 2014s.

Any other online dealers selling the 2014 Elephant (and earlier year) for less than what APMEX is charging for?

APMEX has the best prices for 2011 and newer Somalia Elephants. Early ones are best found on ebay. dios111 is a reputable seller with good selection and pricing.
