I bought a set of Elephants from dios111 - he was excellent to deal with. He indicates these are readily available to him since he lives in Germany - he has a nice price and selection for most of them.

Thank you for sharing guys.
I saw Gainsvillescoins is selling the 2014 Elephant 1oz for around $30 + shipping. Anyone interested in getting a group buy and splitting one or more tube(s)?

APMEX is running the best deal I've ever seen on the 2014. I would jump on it because if the past is an indicator it won't last long. Check or wire price for one tube is $522.20. Credit card price is $537.87. Shipping is $14.95.

How many different 2014 Elephants are there. Here's my list so far. If you know of more please post.
1. BU 2. Gilded 3. Colored "Night" 4. 2 coin Day and Night set 5. Kilo BU 6 Privy 7. Proof
Proof set? Fractionals? Gold coins?
I need some more money! I'd love to have that kilo coin.

@yellow go take a look at Apmex- they have the 2014 gold 1 oz Somalian elephants, they usually have a batch and they sell out,,, very great coin to own, I haven't gotten one yet. They also carry two smaller sizes. I haven't checked lately but about a month ago or so APMEX did have gold ones. I also noticed that there is a ten year jubilee set on ebay with all coins in silver from 2004, its a limited set to only 500 coins, comes in a box and a COA. Looks really nice but I dont think I would get it since I like the quest of getting each individual year. I also got my color set today. GOD ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!! This has got to be one of the best sets EVER. I did order a high relief proof for 2012 and while I liked the coin, the dealer I got it from on ebay gave me one with black smudges around the numbers,,, which was disappointing :/ I was able to return the set with full refund and I probably would have exchanged one with them but I got spooked by them since they were extremely slow in responding to my concern with the coin. They also have proof sets in silver, fractionals, I have a couple sets, very happy with them. I am so glad to see this thread being used and that lots other folks love these series. Those who insist these coins are just "rounds" are wrong. These coins are real legal tender and demand is strong. I think that these Somalia elephants are going to smoke the China pandas going forward.

If you have time or the inclination post a pic of the high relief proof I'd really like to see it. It must be exceptional because the Elephants are minted to almost proof like standards already.
My first foray into collecting world modern coins was the Pandas and I still collect and enjoy them.
I like the Elephants more though. Putting together a BU set of the entire series is within reason and the price appreciation relative to the Pandas of similar years is greater. With only 5000 BU coins minted per year from 2004-2008 (less than 5000 for 2005) they're a lot rarer than the Pandas. The Elephants have been getting more and more attention especially with some of the big US retailers carrying the coins. Some are carrying graded Elephants at a substantial premium above a similar Panda.
I really enjoy colored and gilded coins. The Germans are very good at creating these types of coins. As an example the colored Pandas were done by a German company (not the same one that does the Elephants). I wonder what the mintage numbers are for colored and gilded Elephants from 2004-2008?
The mystique of the Elephant is also a lot of fun. Not only do I think it adds to the appeal thus increasing demand and raising prices but it brings a great deal of enjoyment to collecting the Elephants as a hobby.
Your posts have been great yup7676 and I've learned a lot. Thanks. And thanks to all the other Elephant collectors who have posted and shared their knowledge and desire to learn more.

@yellow Alas my friend, I sent back my high relief elephant coin :/ The dealer off ebay sent me one, looked great, everything. In fact the coin is beautiful. However, there were black smudges on the outline of the numbers .999 and then black smudges around the words "Africa". I reported the issue to the dealer, who took 3 days before getting back to me, then didn't tell me where to send the coin back, then wanted me to take pics of the coin before sending it etc etc. They did offer to exchange it, which at first I would gladly have done but I did get spooked by the fact they took so darn long in communicating with me,,, they did give me a full refund including shipping and did offer to refund my shipping back to them which I didn't get back to them but in any case I will be looking for another HR elephant. I have earlier year Pandas and I mean I do like the coin but going forward I just will not be purchasing them for my collection. Looks like the Panda era has come and gone to me. They will still have a market but they are not the high fliers anymore. At first I was not a fan of colored coins. But as I came to like the Somalian elephant series, I started to be more open to the concept and I took delivery of my first colored ones and yes they are great. The Germans do a great job with that process I believe that Canadian wildlife series also has some colored coins as well. What I have enjoyed doing is stalking ebay and waiting and watching for upcoming auctions of older Somalian elephant dates, including the gilded and colored ones and have been able to get some good prices. I think that's part of the fun for me is back tracking and building this collection from scratch, and theres so much to get so it will take time but it will be fun! It is interesting about the graded coins as well, I have noticed myself the higher prems they carry. I might break down to get a proof 70 next time I see one on auction from MCM on ebay. I am very happy to hear you have found this thread useful. When I started this thread there were some snide comments and I have seen some here even snickering at how legit these coins are and some questioning whether they had any merit since they were just "rounds" to them. Obviously the market place says otherwise and doesn't consider these coins just "rounds". I am also happy to see everyone else chipping in and contributing what they see or know about these coins. I don't see or haven't seen an informative thread such as ours anywhere on the Internet yet so hopefully as time goes on, others that know more about this series will get involved and contribute and we'll learn more about this exciting series! I been compiling data on prices but its been hard to find the time to draw the data all together but that would be a long term goal of mine.

I'm really not a fan of coloured coins. I believe coins should be a piece of solid metal. It's the luster of metal that makes coins such beautiful things to look at and splashing paint on them rather wrecks the image in my view.
I'll go one step further and say I don't even like plated coins (even though the currency in my country is mostly plated steel) because I think it's a cheat. A gold plated coin looks like it's made of gold, but really it's just a layer a few microns thick. I would rather buy a solid silver coin that looks silver and is silver than a gold plated coin that looks gold, but is actually junk.

@ Mr Bishopp
I was not a fan of colored coins nor gilded ones at first. I thought the same..... that it took away the beauty of the metal. But then with these Somalia elephant coins, I decided I'll collect all of them.
I received my first colored coins of the elephants and they were just done so majestically, in fact, if anything, the colored coins brought out even more detail from the regular silver coins, which ALREADY are beautiful coins.
At that point, I started to pay attention to colored coins. For sure, these elephant colored coins are very very very well made.

1st - I don't like either colored or gilded coins - fake look at them 2nd - price appreciation of colored elephants lags the one of noncolored - one can get colored versions of early elephants cheaper than noncolored ones
P.S. have only 2011 elephant that I've bought as a part of coin collection
