So I'm guessing that hosting pictures off-site saves CCF bandwidth and possible expense? Say for example, you just posted two dozen pics to CCF--some of coins, some not--and every time the page gets loaded in a member's browser, this contributes to traffic hitting the server and possible bandwidth-related charges? No doubt this adds up if everybody does it.  On the other hand, if you host all your pics on a free server such as Photobucket, CCF will never get dinged for those pictures, whether they are coins or silly non-numismatic pics-- Am I right here?  If you're unsure how to host pictures for free, check out Xshift's excellent tutorial linked above. Consider hosting pictures elsewhere--as a contribution to the success of CCF. I use my Flickr account to host pictures. Although Flickr has a small annual fee, the great thing about that site is how it processes my original pic into 12 different images from icon-sized pics to full-size, making it very easy and versatile for hosting my coin pics for CCF.

Question: when you do this and want to show the coin in a communication, will the image show up or a link to the image?

Depends on the coding you use. The forum has code to display the image directly if you place the url between "[ img]" and '[ /img]' no quotes then the image itself will be displayed if you just paste the url then a link will be displayed  or http://www.mycoins.us/USA/Five%20Do...DSC06254.jpgEdited by nohope587

Okay, the downside... The photos on CCF will never be deleted, however, we have no control over third party sites. Take a stroll through some older threads and see the missing images.  CCF has a photo gallery available to valued members. Different server (and separate login required) with no size limits.  |

Pictures on offsite storage don't need to be deleted completely to make the links here dead; if you or the admins of the photo website reorganize or archive the albums such that the URL for the pic changes, the links posted here expire, too.
I never use photobucket or other offsite photo hosts, and would never recommend anyone else use it. If the direct download-into-post is too awkward or restrictive, try the CCF Gallery jbuck mentioned instead.

So I guess I was a bit too subtle in my OP--if you use a lot of non-numismatic pictures in your posts on CCF, it's probably better to use the bandwidth of a free site such as tinypic or photobucket. I sought confirmation in my OP, because I think people have taken 'vacations' by abusing CCF image hosting--and I'm trying to spare people the trouble. And regarding offsite photos getting dead--well, it's never happened to me unkowingly. Flickr does not change the URL of pics unless you change privacy settings or actually replace the picture. Personally, Flickr is great for a lot of reasons, including 12 different sizes, and a host of ways to organize your pictures keywords, sets, galleries, etc. So yeah--I'm sold on it for ease of use and flexibility. In 99% of the cases the 100K limit is just fine. People just need to be educated on photo editing.... Something wrong with these?   Closeups are just fine within the limit too...  |

Although my exposure is limited, I have to agree, Flickr is pretty good. But let me be be honest... this is my own opinion and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of CCF or its owners... Photobucket is the worst thing to use here. Quote:
