Ok, I just sent it again. Sorry about the offtopic stuff here. Check your spam box too. Not sure why it would be there, but you never know.

I am not judging individual coins; we can't expect the first coin bought to be a top coin. I am judging on development as shown by the pair. GOLD: DavidUK, good quality from beginning to end SILVER: CoinsKelly, inexpensive, but good quality, beginning, to nice quality recent BRONZE: AncientNoob, nice broadening, from late Roman to Indo-Greek

Everyone's got at least a point now!
My votes: BRONZE - January1May - Humble beginnings from a humble coin - the effort is what puts this as bronze - and the first russian coin in a smackdown, I believe SILVER - ValiantKnight - I love that theodohad. GOLD - Maridvnvm - Love that first coin - a great die engraver did that.
Honourable Mention: Augustus - got to love an elephant quadriga.

Quote: You chose a good starter coin too - one of my favourite designs. I didn't really choose the design I basically sorted through that dealer's $6 box and picked out all the coins where I could read the emperor's name; then I tried to choose out of these (seven or eight in total), which took a good part of a hour, and ultimately the two main reasons I chose what I did were that 1) it had better contrast in the design, which I thought would've helped in photographing, and 2) it was the only one out of these recognizable emperors that wasn't a Consta-something (ignoring a Gallienus with barely readable obverse and even worse reverse) and I thought it was cool then again the beautiful design probably helped as well (I did like the detail on Victory's wings and especially clothes). EDIT (addition): Quote: and the first russian coin in a smackdown, I believe Well of course... the only Russian coins that are anywhere near counting as ancients are those of Kievan Rus (and nearby states of the same general period), which are all stuck somewhere between very rare and extremely rare (except for a few that are even rarer); read: the collectors that can afford that probably won't go as low as this forum (though there was that recent thread about Roman gold... maybe that guy could've afforded a silver coin of Kievan Rus, and even that's assuming he ever found one). The coin I posted, specifically, is from the first half of the 16th century, which is most assuredly not ancient, and had it not been for its very much non-modern style wouldn't have been medieval either. It pretty much only got here because of a loophole; and unless a future smackdown manages to have a vague enough theme that such coins could get included, there might well never be another similar coin posted in them (not even from me).
