Dear experts, I've not sure whether it's british or imitation (german). I can spell MONETA ISE(*)BE on obverse and MONETA (...) on reverse with distinctive detail before legend - cross on shield.

Would be grateful for any help or hint ;-)

It looks like a short cross penny of John however IMO the text seems wrong. Short cross coinage is usually quite hard to pin down as they all beared the name 'HENRICVS'.

It could be also German imitative pfennig: http://www.mcsearch.info/search.htm...rt=&c=&a=&l=
Just want to make sure it's not British, to move forward with research.
Thanks in advance.

MONETA in the legend pretty much rules out an English coin. The design of the coin in your link looks very close, but no MONETA in the legend. This one has it, though:

Thank you Philadelphian. So it must be German imitative type, presumably from city Iserlohn.

Yes! Do you believe the legend reads "+MONETA ISERE..." on the obverse? Medieval coin inscriptions for that city can also read ISEREN LON.

A Peter Berghaus seems to have written some articles on the medieval coinage of Iserlohn in the German numismatic literature, titled "Moneta Isere."

With a helping hint from a German colleague, here is an identified specimen with slightly different legends: Adolph I von der Mark 1199-1249

I see now where there is a diagonally-held sceptre at 7 o'clock, in imitation of the short-cross pennies of Henry III!
I guess this thread does belong on the UK forum!
