The very first thing you ask yourself with these coins is , Is it genuine? I have not studied these at all so I can't pick a fake. however this doesn't look "Right" I can't explain why but it looks somehow odd

Hard for me to tell the grade as I am reluctant to buy one as there are heaps of fakes as trout mentioned although it does seem to have a bit of wear

Strange how the wear is so obvious on the reverse but hardly noticeable on the obverse.
VF/gEF $350 to $400.

IMO Genuine. Cleaned, soft strike reverse, unpleasant rim ding, nicer Obverse. Overall gVF to aEF, too much wear on reverse, prob poor storeage. On ebay probably $340ish I'd pay $270

Quote: I am reluctant to buy one as there are heaps of fakes as trout mentioned although it does seem to have a bit of wear THATS what looks odd, the obverse is in great condition and the reverse looks pretty beat up. Going by the colour and the dullness of the coin and the way the lettering is all bright I would say this has suffered from a clean in the past.

Okay he said it was graded EF/gEF and it has been offered to me for $420. Personally I quite like it with the great toning but are you sure its been cleaned? if it has then I will pass on it. He also offered me this one as well for the same price. Any oppinions on it? Please dont tell me its also cleaned?

They may not have been cleaned but sinply been circulated briefly and then toned. I personally prefer the look of the second one.

The Second one looks better IMHO.

The second is better, the first looks cleaned. I wouldn't go right to saying its cleaned without seeing it in hand though - some key indicators: - good detail yet obverse surfaces worn - reflective high reverse points
$420 seems a bit expensive though, you should be able to get a low-end MS for that price.

Well I am quite shocked that the first one was cleaned and that a pretty reputable company would offer them. Anyone care to take a guess at which one it was? p.s. it could also be an auction company;) also wwwww where do you buy them from cause this is one of the cheapest centenary florins in ef that I have ever seen.

Is that really so surprising? A majority of valuable, uncertified Aussie pre-decimal and gold that turn up in major Australian auctions have been doctored - how often do you see them mention it? Ever notice sometimes a coin sells at auction for many times its book value/estimate? It's probably because it's uncleaned.
I haven't seen one in MS60-62 on the market in a while - the last one I saw advertised was an NGC MS60 at $400 from a dealer in Greece but that was a few months ago. They're not really worth slabbing unless you get at least MS63 out of them (as you can plainly see from the MS60 price compared with the cleaned EF price) so people only send over the nice ones making MS60-62 pieces hard to find in holders.

I just found the source of them, something you should note about buying unsolds is that a room full of bidders who would have viewed the coins in hand turned them down - there probably was a reason for that - quality coins rarely go unsold.
