going very very well. I reckon I have 20 coins of resale quality in here! Heres pictures of the coins with busts visible: Heres my most detailed coin yet! Encrusted, sure, but the first time I've had such detail: Carausius, Crispus: And some 5th century ones for you guys to help me with (big nose there is Theodosius, cross in wreath): Again, Theo on the left: This curious fellow, whats in that wreath?: (sorry, image rotated itself) Marcian! Lots more to do, amazing the coins that are coming out of this! I thought a few of these would be near blank.

Very nice coins. Looks like they are starting to turn out good. I think they need some more work though.

A DIVO CLAVDIO and a Carausius. Seems like a good batch.

Quote: 'What is this?' My favourite game As Martin has already pointed out a good start with a DIVO Claudius and a Carausius I think I see an Aurelian and a couple of Constantius Gallus coins in the first picture.

Ben:
Great looking coins! Do you mind if I ask where you got them from. I had 1/6 of a kilogram delivered this week from England and I can say they didn't look anything like yours.

I got these from a seller on ebay. his lots ended at a funny time on saturday morning so I got them cheap. I unfortunately missed the first couple of lots, but I picked these up. theres a few other posts on this lot in the backlog. Ive emailed him to find out where they came from for provenance of a couple. These were sorted and picked with a few nice ones left in, I believe. Its my 4th lot I've had, this was for christmas. 108 coins in all, including my most valuable and my rarest and my most historically valuable piece.

The first two are a BEATA variety which is rare and sells for £80 in a lesser condition to mine. But thats not true rarity, there are beatas everywhere.
True rarity is in the Marcus Aurelius PROFECTIO coin. One sold for near $600 in a better condition. It was missed because of all the patina and design that has fallen off. Not much of it left, really, but its still a great piece. It shows Marcus Aurelius and the army departing from Rome to fight the Germanic Wars.

Ben, that Carausius you have is a "cracker"! The "VIRTVS AVG" type with Mars is rare and VF ones sell well! See here: http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=167399Oh yes, a Crispus AE, in good condition, will also sell well too. I think I see a ".. LG" in the exergue of the reverse it, if so, then it is from the Lyon mint.

Ooh wow! I had no idea. I thought it was run of the mill. How do you reckon this one would do? In hand, its a lovely effect, but pictures do it no justice for the obverse.
£20? Could pay off the batch it came in and make a steady profit like that.

Thing is Ben that I cannot tell you how to sell it. It is up to you. Although the type is rare, condition also effects the end price. Below is a Carausius I cleaned, I only paid about £0.89 for it, and it sold, after 10 days, for the grand price off.... £0.99. As seems to have happened with your Carausius, my one had originally been silvered but that had become corroded, marring the look of the coin, no more cleaning could enhance it. Also below I show a Carausius I bought last year, with intact surfacing and a good, natural, dark green patina, found in the West Country. It sold well.

3rd coin from the top right, seems to a Constantius Gallus/Julian II. Either one is a popular seller.

Had a sestertius which was really caked - unfortunately pretty smooth underneath the dirt. But I could tell this was a nice candidate for (look away now if you are of a squeamish disposition) depatination (ominous boom of thunder). I stopped at a point I feel I like the finish of - you people will, I'm sure, think its a horrifying mess, but I reckon it was worth it for the detail - I can now positively ID it as Antoninus Pius with a Moneta reverse (which was pretty nice when the dirt came off, so I tried to keept it as intact as possible). Heres some pictures of it: It looks pretty shoddy in the pictures, but the detail is really nice in hand. This will be my 'pass it around' coin to show guests - a pocket piece if I need one. I tell you what though - if there was a way to only depatinate the bust and the letters, THAT would be good.
