The old knuckle buster credit card imprinter is still alive and in place for may restaurants. We have one in our "crash kit" and I have used it on many occasions when the power goes out.

So many times I wished they would make cc lines only - but never saw a store implement this. It is so much easier nowadays.

How times have changed! Today I wish they had credit card only lines because it is the cash and check customers that take so long. I absolutely dread getting behind someone that wants to pay with a check. Many don't even take their checkbook out of their purse until the cashier has finished ringing up every item and tells them the total. THEN they dig around in their purse for checkbook, SLOWLY flip through the pages till they find their current check. ONLY to remember that they need a pen to write out the check so back to the purse again. THEN and ONLY then does the check writing begin. It drives me CRAZY! Ban checks already!

Most cash customers aren't that bad, it takes longer than paying by credit card but not nearly as long as a check. That is unless the customer wants to pay with exact change (because they hate change) and is just sure they have another penny or two somewhere.

I have lived in several states and have cashiered in them too. Most people when they pay with cash give you just the bills and collect the change one state was consistent with paying with the change too, Utah.

Earle, you forgot a few steps... Call the bank number on the back of the card, wait for a representative, answer a few questions, give them the purchase amount, wait for them to verify the purchase amount is below their limit, wait for them to issue the hold, wait for them to give you a verification number, write the verification number on the form...

@jbuck - thanks for reminding me - more nightmares tonight!

@JSH
You are right about the checks - this is something that has not changed since back then. It seemed a CC user always had a couple check writers behind them also.

OK - lets go with one on the other side of things...

I always used to drop change in a persons' hand, and then place the bills on top. Otherwise the change tends to slide off of the bills and get dropped. Why do so many cashiers do the opposite?

I hate this. If the change is in the hand, the bills can be put away and the change put in a pocket. If its the other way around, you have to slide the coins from off of the bills into another hand, put them in a pocket, and then put away the bills.

Nina - our beloved resident youngin' ... can you enlighten me and tell me what I am missing here?

Doesn't count. Utah might as well be a different country. ;-)

Absolutely 100% spot on, Earle! Let me add another twist - a drive-thru window with a breeze blowing: Put my change in first and then I can clamp down on the bills as soon as they are placed in my hand.

It's probably because instead of making change like we do - get the coins necessary to get to the next dollar, then add bills to get to the tendered amount - they just read the change amount off the register.

If it's windy and they place the bills first, I clamp down on them immediately and put them in my pocket. If they drop the change where my hand once was I ask why they would put the stuff that flies away in my hand first. Worst case, I lose less than $1 in change. That's better than chasing down a dollar or more blowing across the parking lot.

I say abandon the cent, five-cent piece and quarter to be left with a dime, half dollar, and dollar coin. Since the quarter would be gone, mint a new half dollar the current size of the quarter. One caveat would be people would be able to spend their current quarters as half dollars. There are other obstacles that would make this a very difficult change to adapt to, although I feel in the end it will help our pocket change keep up with inflation.

maybe a half dollar roughly the same size as the former quarter, but maybe a different shape, 6 or 12-sided?

I agree, sort of. I suggest making the new half dollar the size of a nickel. The dollar coin is already close to the size of a quarter. The new half dollar could be a bit thicker than a nickel so people couldn't use old nickles in new vending machines.

I like Nina's idea of a CuNi dollar.

We could even have a 20c piece the size of a penny! Then our money will get progressively larger as the denominations gets larger.

Actually it might not be a bad idea to re-use the penny's size.

How many vending machines accept pennies today anyways? The only systems I am aware of are sophisticated enough to be able to tell the difference of something made from a different composition.

Would the coin counting machines at the bank be able to tell the difference?
