I have a book to look at counterfeit 1/2 dollar bust coins....but I can't tell if this one is real or not. Can anyone help me? Thanks so much.

Looks like a real 1834 Small Date, Small Letters. I don't have time to check the Overton variety, but if nobody else gets to it, I'll try in a little while

It looks real to me, but I'd really like to see a closer, larger pic of both the obverse and reverse (preferably out of the holder) before I give a definite opinion.

Yes, a pic without the glare would really help examine details and determine variety/authenticity.
