Interesting thread, I feel a lot more interesting things are yet to come as the transition continues!

I too felt robbed of my experience (not money) when I didn't get my pennies back from my Timmies...I liked to look for varieties or anything old :(

I work in a convenience store and we regularly have people bring us rolled change to switch into bills. As long as we have pennies in the till we will continue to give them out as change.

Any one want my 5 boxes of pennies? I looked through them all, took out all pre 64, 1967 and checked the 2006s. I have not taken any copper out, so all the copper ones are there. I will be dropping these boxes off at the bank sometime this week, was wondering if anyone wanted them. I can deliver in the GTA lol

I'd like to see the nickel and dime disappear and we round up to the nearest quarter! Glenn

At Zehr's yesterday they were still handing out pennies in change. At Home Depot, they round down completely to the next lowest 5c -- whether it's 1c or 4c.

@RoyalSilver: Put them into the Royal Bank as part of their clear water initiative.

at my store I have buckets and buckets (and buckets) of pennies from the last 20 years of emptying the change tray and being too lazy to roll them for the bank.
i am going to single handidly keep pennies in circulation for the next 20 years !
I've always figured pennies were flowing from a bank to a businesses to the consumer in change. Do people pay with pennies? You should have some stories to tell eventually. The powers-that-be may start to wonder where the heck you're getting pennies in 2030. "Is he making his own?!" LOL.

Not to pick on Canada Post again (oh why the heck not!) I was told today by someone that her husband went in to buy a single stamp. It came to 71 cents cash and they asked for that 1 cent. Apparently the government hasn't explained how things are supposed to work to the Post Office.

Rounding occurred twice for me today.
I'm planning on going to the bank to make repeated withdrawals from my account for 3 cents at a time! LOL

The government is encouraging (not forcing) businesses to start rounding. If a business still has the ability to give change to the penny, then they have every right to ask for every penny.

That does seem to be the case. As long as stores etc. have pennies they'll keep using them until they're gone, then that's it. Makes sense I suppose.
But geez, you'd think a government agency like the Post Office ought to be setting some kind of example. Otherwise it's all kind of senseless.

my expectation for the post office is that the next price increase will move stamps to multiples of 5 cents.

A carton of large eggs costs $1.99. Suppose I go to the store to buy two cartons each time and that's it. That's $3.98 that gets rounded up to $4.00 each time. After 50 purchases like this I should have enough for another carton but it gets robbed from me. 50 cartons for the price of 51 over the longrun. To add to this insult they still charge 5 cents for a plastic bag. If I opt for that, it would cost $4.05 for the two cartons with the bag when it should be costing $4.03. 7 cents for a crummy plastic bag is beyond the already ridiculous 5 cents.
