I have recently been interested in starting to metal detect. I dont have a metal detector right now.but am thinking about getting one in the next few months.

I live in georgia and was wondering if anyone was familar with the laws in ga about metal detecting at parks, schools, lakes, etc.

The law will probably differ from place to place. My policy is, if it's not posted, and public, like a park or schoolground, it's fair game. I don't call the city to ask for permission to hunt parks, because you will set them up for an easy "no", regardless of whether there's a law or not. The couple times that I called, the guy at the desk told me no one had ever called for permission before, "they just did it".
You can always check local city parks and recreation websites for more info. Good luck.

I just did a quick search on Georgia Government's site, and it doesn't look promising.

Yes the Government sites never are. The Michigan DNR state park sites for instance list the gravel parking lots as the only metal-detectable places, bummer. I would check city and county parks and rec websites. Also, historical sites are almost always a no-no.

cant say I've heard of anyone getting thrown in jail for metal detecting. play dumb if confronted. but if I was in georgia in a battleground and historically older state. I would do some homework and see if any soldiers were encamed in your area and see if you can access those areas. they would likely be near water. if you have too talk to landowners and farmers and do a gentlemans agreement to split any finds.the worst they can do is say anger. or ask any really old folks you know if they can think of any good spots. this will surprise you the oldies remember odd things.

In the US, ignorance of the law just doesn't cut it anymore. If caught detecting on a national historic site, chances are great that you will be arrested, your vehicle and detector confiscated, you will be fined, and probably go to jail.
There are many links and articles on the internet of persons convicted and jailed because of illegal metal detecting.
