I found this and am trying to determine if it is indeed one. How does an expert come to the conclusion that it is one? Anyone have one that they could share the attributes of? Thanks.
I was going to point that out on your last post about a partial collar. Sorry, I've been busy lately. When the collar only comes up partially around the planchet the force of the strike pushes the edge into the collar forming the reeding but the area not constrained by the collar flows out to a larger diameter. That is where the term "railroad rim" comes from. When you look at a coin's edge you have a small diameter and a large diameter just like when you look at the edge of a railroad wheel. The large diameter is the area unstruck by the collar.
