I have a roman steelyard weight and wondered if anyone could date it better , I haven't posted it in this thread as I'm not sure if its out of place on a coin website . If it would be against forum rules I will forget it Just hoping to use the knowledge of you guys Thanks

Amazing! Well, I am sure you know about Roman Steelyard weights, so instead of posting info on that, I'll post info on the god it seems to depict. It seems to be a bust of the god Mercury, who was associated with commerce. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_(mythology)Note the "wings" on the head of the bust. Date wise, tricky, of course it would not likely have been made in the Christian era of the empire, from the mid 4th century onwards. Style looks very provincial, I'm guessing you found it here in England, so it would not be far fetched to think it was made in "southern Britannia".

That is one cool weight! Yours puts mine to shame. I would say its early Roman; around 50BC-150AD from similar designs I have seen on the web.

M'bean, did you get the pictures I emailed you? I had a few issues with my phone so I wasn't sure whether they actually sent or not.
