I can't tell you how long ago I got these, 20 plus years, but as I am gathering things to go on ebay, I found this uncut sheet of four "cancelled" Louisiana Baby Bonds. I did a quick ebay search to see what these were fetching, like all things being auctioned it varies. But I did not notice any "cancelled" versions.

The sheet is too big for my scanner, so the top is cut off, although it is intact.

Whoever cancelled these put a punch through the...I guess most obvious spot. The cancellation areas almost look like BB holes, with a couple of tears eminating from the holes instead of a "clean-break" from a punch.

I don't think I have seen cancelled ones before. My guess would be someone added that to make it appear more interesting. I doubt that it adds any value.

I have a baby bond that has the strips on the right side cut off and stamped with cancelled across the note (no holes). I paid around 10-15 dollars for it, but I'm not sure about the value of a whole uncut sheet.

The reality is, these were all cancelled and have no redeemable value. These "baby bonds" circulated as currency during the Reconstruction era when the Southern economy was struggling and federal currency was scarce. They were subject to a massive fraud in the 1880s when it was discovered that Ed Bunker, Louisiana's State Treasurer, had reprinted some $300,000 of these bonds with identical serial numbers, using the original plates.

Here is sort of a "sister" bond, issued by the City of New Orleans around the same time, which also circulated as currency.

There are also Louisiana Baby Bonds with green serial numbers, too! The green serial numbered ones I have are printed on a light blue tinted paper.

Don't own this one, saw it on ebay. Doesn't have the punch cancel as the others.

You know, the serial number on that one looks kind of dicey, Nells. Rubber stamped and not printed. That could very well be one of the fraudulent baby bonds that Ed Bunker created. Very interesting! I haven't seen one like that before.

If I had the time and was in a real OCD mood (meaning I just may try this), I could play with the image and lay the # next to the baby with the ones on the coupons, so see if they are exact...

;-)
