i'd really like to add one to my collection but am a bit nervous of ebay & picking up a fake.

are there a lot of these out there? other than weight (is 26 g within tolerances?) and edge lettering, are there any other common markers to look for in a fake?

Circulation issue was around 700,000 units. If you believe the vendors, most of them are on sale every day on ebay. It's possibly one of the most commonly faked modern coins, I had to buy an original currency set for the year to get mine and even then I was worried until it arrived.

Thanks Alganbagerap, I too have been tentatively looking at ebay, but decided not to "dabble" - glad I didn't. So, basically the best thing to do is to buy from a reputable dealer and "try" before you buy so to speak. What should we be looking out for to ensure that it is real?

Michael, if you're unaware of these fakes you might care to look at alibaba.com.
It's a supplier listing from mainly China. In the past few months there have been listings for, among others:
1792 countermarked dollar

1763 Northumberland shilling

1864 florin

1893 sixpence

1935 crown

Mostly for a minimum order of 100 pcs.

These are not necessarily a problem for experienced collectors but the fakes are getting better and better. Take a look on CCF particularly at Swamperbob, a man who knows more about fakes and counterfeits than anyone has a right to. We are lucky to have him here, his expertise has helped all of us. If you haven't found the fakes yet, you will.
