Alright, I just got back the first email from one of my coins. First they asked me if I was the person who "wrote their email on a coin?" I explained yes and told them to try and figure out what years that nickel was minted in. They replied "between 1913 and 1938 :P". Correct! I am now waiting for more emails. I am surprised I actually got an email back.

Thanks - it was a lot of fun! Who knows how many new collectors we'll all create with this one little contest :)

My buffalos are all free grazing now. Email sent, NJ Bob. This was fun, and I guess I have been collecting so long it's easy to forget how awe-inspiring something as simple as an old U.S. coin can be. Glad to bring that sense of wonder to some new people. I appreciate the contest!

We haven't heard from all the contestants yet so we need to wait a bit longer before selecting a winner.

The stories have been great and I have had a lot of fun reading about all the ways the Buffs found new homes. You guys are not making picking a winner easy.

Here's what I did with my Buffalo nickels:

1. Gave one to the waitress at Genghis Grill as part of her tip at lunch. She was fascinated by the coin and thought it was cool!
2. Gave one to the owner of my local coin store and asked him to give it free of charge to the next kid who came into the store. He told me later in the day it was given away about 10 minutes after I left, and the kid wanted to buy more from his (dealer's) lot for sale too. Promotes his business and the collecting hobby at the same time.
3. Gave one to a 4 year old boy on a call for service I went to - a little background here...I'm a police officer and we got called to investigate a boy who was bleeding in the front yard of his house; the boy fell and hit his forehead playing outside and was bleeding, and I gave him one of the nickels to make him feel better and encouraged him to try and find more like it. He stopped crying and kept flipping the coin over in his hand so it must have worked.
4. Put one in a roll of nickels I exchanged at the bank. Someone is gonna be surprised.
5. Gave one to a coworker who wants to get his daughter started on the hobby and said if I would give him one, he would give it to his 6 year old daughter as a neat surprise gift. I doubt she's ever seen a Buffalo nickel before. Maybe now she'll seek out more.

Some cool stories - I think this has been a pretty good success!

I liked the various ways you had to distribute yours skyshark - some creative and unique fun.

Any updates here? It's been a week and half since the last story - hopefully everyone has had a chance to release their buffalo to the wild by now :)

Yes, I need to give you guys an update.

One of the five finalists did not respond despite multiple attempts to contact them. Eventually a new finalist, oih82w8, was chosen.

I had some trouble getting the coins out to him so there was a one week delay while I was out of town...

Well, long story short, he has them now and I expect he will report back to us in the next couple of days.

I will then write up a summary of the stories and pick a winner. It ain't gonna be easy.

Thanks to all of you for your patience.

I can't say that I am very creative, I received the buffs from NJ Bob and threw in a couple of my own;

1. Placed into the coin counting machine

2. Spent one down at the ice cream parlor

3. Placed into a roll of nickels that were deposited at the credit union (one of the few banking establishments that still take rolled coins)

4. Left as part of a tip at a restaurant

5. Vending machine deposit

6. Put it in the collection plate at church

7. Placed one in the McDonalds charity collection box (I can just image some coin collectors going nuts looking at it)

Fun, fun, fun!
