Is This Natural Wheat Penny Toning?

Schwanke Valued Member United States 242 Posts	Posted 03/30/2013 3:09 pm Ive found multiple wheat pennies with this dark red coloring. Far more with the usually dim brown. Is the dark red a toning of some kind? On the Numismatic price guide it has listings for three types of each coin a a brown, a red brown and a a red. I assumed this wasnt the red brown because the description of the red is the original coloring and this looks more like toning then say the color of a AU 1958 or something. Atleast to me. Thanks! sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21788 Posts	Posted 03/31/2013 8:27 pm I have seen Australian bronze pennies and half pennies, with a slight hint of purple toning. During the war years, short cuts were made regarding the refining of the copper for the coins. The trace amounts of gold were not removed. Gold, when very finely divided is purple, just like silver is black, on the old photographic negatives. Perhaps the reason for the purplish tinge was due to finely divided gold, which due to the tiny quantities involved, was not worth refining out. Report this Post to the Staff
