While collecting coins from currency in HK and Macau I have noticed an absense of a lot of dates. For HK I have only found coins dated through 1998 with the exception of the $5 coin which I have found with a 2012 date. Are there any HK coins that were made from 1999 to 2012? For Macau I have only found 5 pataca coins dated 2007, 1 pataca coins dated 2003, 2005 and 2007 and 10 avos coins dated 2005 and 2007. Have coins only been made 3 different years in Macau since 1999? Any info would be great.

No any coins issued between 1999 to 2012 because most of the people have a card called "octopus card", it is an electronic money devise actually. There is a wide various occasions to use this card to pay any small amount of payments. Bus, supermarkets, fast-food restaurant, stores,....many many. So daily money changes become seldom.

BTW, looking through an old junk bin of mine the other day & ran across a '52 5 avos.

Thanks for the info. I am wondering if the octopus cards are tied to a bank account or if you have to add money to the card when you run out. I love the Guangfo cards here that are good for the Foshan and Guangzhou buses and the Guangzhou Metro. Very convenient. I love the subway card in HK also.
