Good discussion guys, I have a related question. For those of us who need others to smelt our coins does anybody know about how much they charge (% wise)?

WARNING!! USE EXTREME CAUTION!!

I've used NaOH (sodium hydroxide) to do this on a very small scale. The easiest way to get it is Red Devil lye is 100% NaOH. Mix it with the shot and melt. It will melt with the silver, float to the top, and provide a slag to keep oxygen out--probably similar to borax. Please be very careful with NaOH it is a very strong base (the opposite of an acid) that will melt your skin off and you will never feel it.
