(edited 8/10) Scroll down to like the 9th post where I added 3 large pics with it out of the mylar flip. I bought a big lot of buffalos on ebay and this is one that is an earlier date with alot of detail but the color on it just seems off. I'm thinking it may have been dipped because it looks more like a 90% silver coin then a nickel. Anyway your opinions would be great! Thanks! Steve Edited by sllyonsjr421 10/10/2007 5:55 pm

I hate to put my opinion in because I'm not the best at detecting cleaning. But that does look cleaned IMO.

I think it does... it looks like the fields are clean but around the letters it seems darker. I'm not an expert though

If it was cleaned it was chemically ,,I see no evidence of any abrasive cleaning in the pics .
best I can say is its possible ,,but really not noticeable in the pictures .

I think it has been cleaned. The obverse looks amazingly clean even on protected areas, but that's not the case with the reverse.

Can't see the cleaning. Maybe improperly stored for years. If it has been chemically cleaned then they picked the wrong chemical.

Again with the caveat that I am no expert, it looks alright from what I can tell. I always look at the grade when I think a coin has been cleaned. If it has great eye appeal and is a low grade I get suspicious. In lieu of actually seeing the coin I would add that whenever I get suspicious about a coin and take it to a trusted expert it usually turns out to have been cleaned. If I have seen enough of a particular coin type I may not be able to say what exactly occurred but can detect that something "just ain't right." Hope this helps!

I have seen nickels tone very strangely due to storage condition. Also, chemical cleaning and true color are difficult to detect when the coin is pictured in a mylar holder. This masks a lot of hairlines that may be on the coin and also makes the color look different because of the way light refracts through the plastic. If you are able, would you mind supplying pictures of the coin outside of the holder? If so, I'd be happy to offer an opinion.

When I get home from class this afternoon I will put up some pictures out of the holder and also take some with it next to another buffalo for color comparison under the same lighting conditions.

Regardless of cleaned or not, it's a nice coin. Almost a full horn on the Buffalo, Bison in reality. A bit to dirty in and around the letters and numbers so if cleaned, a long time ago. If your planning on keeping it, should make no difference.

Ok here are the new pics showing it in the same light as a 1919 thats a little better condition but looks natural. I am actually in the business of buying them on ebay in lots and getting the best I can for the least price and then reselling so this is something that I would like to sell, BUT if it is cleaned I want to be able to disclose that and be upfront with the auction. I hate to sell someone a coin that has been cleaned and I didn't know it, feel like I am putting my integrity on the line if I do that. The color of it just doesn't look right. If you guys aren't sure I will take it down to the dealer I trust most in town but its an hour drive each way so trying to save gas by getting opinions on here . Anyway enough of that onto the pictures!

I also feel that if it was cleaned, it was long ago. It was also lightly done. Overall, I think you have a pretty nice 1923 there.

It's a nice coin, and worth owning. I don't like the color, though. If it were me, I would mention how nice the coin is (your photos are plenty good enough so that a buyer won't think you're being deceptive), but that I was not sure whether the coin had been lightly cleaned at one time or another. Also mention the lack of hairlines, to narrow down what you're calling "cleaning."

I really appreciate all of the comments from you guys. I think that by using the pictures that show the correct color and making sure to mention in the auction that it might have been cleaned but that there isn't hairlines to show a harsh cleaning, that I should be fine to sell it. Thanks again guys this community truly has some of the most knowledgeable coin collectors anywhere!

Another vote for a light cleaning. Based on the wear, it should be bit darker than it is.
