Don't know what caused the sudden spike in sales, but there were 468 available last night, and there's 269 available tonight (199 sold in one day) when they've been averaging daily sales anywhere from 20-46 for almost 2 weeks now. Odd.

I don't feel anything you stated to be about the art of the coin either. No comment on the colouring, detailing, layout, design, and finish of the coin, just price and weight

@poboxw

You are so anti flipper that all you read is what you want to see. Go back and read the 4th paragraph again. I clearly mention the that engraving is inadequate and the the art falls sort of other colored coins making this coin as put by others "Garbage". Simple not worth the money. If the coin was selling for $40 I might buy one but not for the outrageous price the mint is asking.

But speaking numistically there is very little to love about this coin. It neither posses the complex engraving of the group of seven coins nor the art factor of the bird coins or the new spring time tree coin. It is simple a bland coin selling at a much higher premium than the previously mentioned coins.

If you want to waste your money or for that matter if every one goes nuts and buys all the stupid coins the mint offers go ahead and be my guest. I will use my common scene and discretion to buy coins of better value and yes with better artistic appeal and not just for future profit, but for my own collection and for my own pleasure. But I won't be the mints fool.

Next thing you know the Mint will be selling Silver Plated wooden nickels with some color on them and everyone will go nuts. "Oh my God I have to buy every new coin".

that email made people think "oh my god, it's going to sell out, this is a hot item, I need to get one" and they proceeded to order one.

I've been concentrating more on bullion recently, but if I wasn't I probably would have ordered this one. I don't understand the hate for this coin.

Poboxw and anyone else who might be interested, here's a link to a photo that may well have been the inspiration for this coin:
http://images.nationalgeographic.co..._990x742.jpg

Honeybees lack the drama of some of their relatives--they are more brown/tan/ochre than yellow--and might not be the best choice for a colored coin--Poboxw, you may have nailed it with your comment about it looking better in black and white. I still have nothing against this coin and totally agree anyone really interested in insects in general and bees in particular would love this coin as a gift.

I also bought 2 coins - yes I commit Why I did do that I don“t know really, probably I like the engineering part on the coin.

But I want to make you all a compliment: You are individuals who like to express their view and state it officially, not a lot of mainstream blabla!

Please keep it that way - this is why I like this forum!

Not anti flipper. I've confessed many times over I sell as well, and in fair volume too. I'm surprised that a few listings one ebay here and there was enough for quite a few buyers to trust my wife and I enough to send their checks over first, knowing we would deliver on whatever it is they are looking for. Very rewarding side hobby, the business of selling to like-minded people.
I'm just anti the notion of value above all. That and insubstantial comments. Art factor =? Bland because?

My apologies. I've regressed yet again to high school banter. I will stop.

@ Rob the Ravenzcoin:
Gotta love national geographic pics, and your choice can't be the inspiration for the coin because it's a much better photo IMO than what the RCM ended up putting on the coin :) Dare I soak it acetone and see it I can remove the paint job?......

@ CC-Ottawa and arianzo:
Can't argue this is a good strategy for the RCM though. Pretty much guaranteed buyers for subsequent coins if the first in the series do well enough. Coin collectors are admittedly a bit OCD in the need to complete series.

I bought one and yes, I think the picture looks better than the coin. My initial thought about the coin when I received it was that the image kind of looks like a mosquito...

Bottom line is . if people are so worried about the amount of silver value of the coin then don't buy it and go buy bullion. Gezzzzzz......

Is the price too high? Maybe....but these are collectors coins , if you like it buy it, if not don't, the price of everything you buy has gone up , some things more then we think they should , in the end if they sell out then it cant be too over priced....

The issue here is that the mint is putting through a price increase. If it flies (pardon the pun), we can expect higher prices being tested across the board.
There's nothing "special" about this coin to warrant the price. No special feature, technology, subject or limited mintage.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with a business testing the market with their prices. It's the way business works.
We as buyers have a choice to buy at that price or not.
I am starting to worry about this hobby/market "jumping the shark". Much like trading cards and beanie babies did. Issues started becoming more and more, prices started escalating and then the market crashed and lost credibility.
You'll always have the precious metal value but in the case of this coin, it won't be much to count on.

What will be interesting is if we see this price trend continue with the recent dip in the silver price.

Calling something a collectable does not add value. You look at every collecting craze in the past few years and in the end collectables are issued in mass quantities with increasing rarity but in the end the market is simply overwhelmed and crashes. Look at baseball cards of the 90's, comic books, and beenie babies. I remember when Robert Bateman prints were selling for hundreds of dollars and now you can pick them up second hand for a few dollars.

I'm just warning you of the inevitable, if you don't learn from the past you are destined to repeat it. I'm not saying don't buy the coin, I'm saying with the massive quantity of coins released this year so far that there are coins that posses much better value and look better. If you buy this coin because you like it great, but if you bought it for any other reason you are in for a surprise. The only reason this coin exists it to feed the appetite of a coin hungry public that are glutenous for anything the Mint produces. This is evident through the public's reaction to the Glass Butterfly coin. People went nuts for some glass on silver. Granted it is a beautiful coin, but did it deserve the mania.

The bee on this coin does look pretty realistic. There are so many other animal architects that they can use to make this series really amazing. Although the price may hold this series back...
