I've read that there are multiple varieties of the Canadian 1946 50 Cents, but I can't find anything that mentions both a die chip in and doubling of the 6. Is this very unusual? (Nothing else on the entire coin is doubled, just the 6).

Since the two last digits were entered manually into the dies for the 1946 Fifty Cent coins, and it took several hammer blows, the chances for a slight misalignment on one of those were quite high.... there are at least three (maybe more) repunched '6' die coins to be found. And the '6' seems quite vulnerable to die chips, as there are several different ones to be found... Zoell classified the repunch as R446a and the die chip is a late die state of that. Nice find.
