Hey all
I was wondering, to be able to get a good reading on beaches, do you need a specific metal detector or could you buy a particular coil?
I am looking to buy either a garret ace 350, fisher f2, or teknetics delta 4000 but I am also interested in detecting on the beach when we go on vacation and stuff.
Also does anyone know or know where I could find the laws of metal detecting in florida and on florida beaches such as daytona.

I am not sure about this, but I think the VLF detectors perform better in wet beach sand than the pulse induction machines. I think the AT Pro, or a similar type machine would serve you best for beach hunting. From Kellyco's FAQ page, I hope this helps. Quote:
Saltwater is a little different than freshwater. Due to its nature, saltwater is more conductive than fresh. This may give a little extra punch down into the ground but will also cause most machines to chirp and chatter quite a bit more. It is especially bad at the surf line on a wet saltwater beach. You can effectively tune out most saltwater effects when the saltwater is consistent (when the coil is covered by a foot or so of water, for example). Along the surf line, the waves are still washing up on the shore and the sand is drying out. This causes pockets of sand that may be higher or lower in conductivity than the surrounding area and can play havoc on your detector. It is best to hunt in the Discrimination mode with the Discrimination knob turned up high enough to knock out iron and foil. This will cancel out a good portion of the saltwater effects. You may also have to turn down your sensitivity to stabilize the detector. |

Yea I'm just not really wanting to spend that,much until I know I am going to use the machine on a regular basis. I will only be metal detecting on the beach occasionally

For salt water hunting, you are probably going to want a Pulse Induction machine or a certain type of VLF machine if you plan on hunting the wet sand or in the surf. By certain type I mean that some do better than others on salt beaches. For freshwater, the possibilities of what water md to buy are endless; salt water beaches, not so much. The reason for this is because with salt water beaches there is a lot of interference in the wet sand and water that many mds can not handle, no matter the settings or coil. The Ace 350, f2, and delta 4000 WILL NOT perform adequately in salt water beaches. They can hunt the dry sand, but the wet sand and beyond will drive them crazy.
Now, as for the AT PRO on salt water beaches, they are the same as the three above. They are not made to hunt the wet sand or water in salt water. They will do just fine freshwater though.
Pulse Induction machines usually do quite well in salt water beaches. The draw back to them is their price, and they can not discriminate; meaning they can not tell apart a quarter from foil. PI machines are deep however.
VLF machines can discriminate, but they are not generally as deep as PI machines. The more you discriminate with a machine, the less depth you can expect to have. The machines I mentioned above are all VLF machines. Now, for a VLF machine that would be good on the beach there are quite a few, with the most talked about among the big boys being the Minelab Excalibar... $1500-1600 new. So out of you price range by a long shot. But there are good salt water VLF beach hunting machines that can get the job done for a good price, as well as some PIs that can be had for less than $1000.
I will warn you, however, do not be fooled into buying the cheap Chinese made beach mds. They are complete junk, and will quickly fail you. Stick to the Brand name md makers.Yes, they will cost much more, but they are built to last and the companies stand behind their products. HH and GL

Thanks for all the info.
so looks like there isn't a particular coil I could buy that would do better near salt water
I dont want to buy a md that is specifically great for saltwater since I will only be going to the beach maybe once every few years.
