The ebay seller, coincoqui, has a counterfeit 1865 $1 Gold Princess for sale:

This is a very poor counterfeit. The counterfeiter used a slanted "5" in the date. It appears it was probably an 186X date and the last numeral was erased and the slanted 5 was inserted.

Under the circumstances, I chose to contact the seller directly. He doesn't fit the mould. If it sells - we have to be sharp on this one - an immediate report will have to be filed with ebay to hopefully abort the transaction. If not, we have to be vigilant about a relisting, but at least that would allow time to report it.

I agree. I believe this seller was probably 'duped' and bought this coin without the proper knowledge to identify the coin as being a counterfeit. $1 golds are the most counterfeited US coins and should only be bought certified by a real TPG.....especially $1500 coins like the 1865.

I agree with the assessment of the seller. I have bought many items in the past from him, especially relating to Puerto Rico (where he has a brick and motor store). He's a straight up guy and I'm sure he has no idea that the coin is a fake. PG

Yes, but only if you do it with deliberate intent to defraud. This seller (in my opinion) gets the benefit of the doubt, and I hope he isn't into the coin for more than melt.

Edit: Owning one is not necessarily illegal.

20 minutes to go with no bidders ... agreed that I will give a seller with this Bay reputation some leeway.
