I really want one because of all the history with the coin but I don't know where to go. I don't want to get ripped off and I dare not buy from ebay in case I get a fake.

Best place is from a dealer, at least you have some comeback, I would not touch E Bay, it is not worth the risk, and you would not necessarily get the best price, Geoff

If you have a reliable auction house nearby you could always keep an eye out there too although don't forget to factor in the buyers commission.

There aren't really any coin dealers around where I live. None that offer reasonable prices anyway. How much should I expect to pay for a Guinea anyway?

I have been buying coins from J.Welsh, P.O.Box 150, Burton-on-Trent, Staffs, DE13 7LB. for years. Phone 01543-473073 for a catalogue after 1pm. He only sells mail order with payment by cheque. All coins sold on 10 days approval.
In his last catalogue (March/April) he had 8 guineas for sale. 1673 - 1794. Grades from VF - Unc and prices from £475 for a 1793 VF to £2500 for a 'rare' 1746 EF/AUnc.
I've allways thought his grading is accurate and prices reasonable. I've only ever returned 1 coin and he sent a cheque by return. The coin returned was an 1893 shilling with small lettering, there was nothing wrong with it but when I saw just how little diference there was compared with the large lettering type I decided that the diference was not worth including in my collection.

Hi Peter, I'm suprised you say that but it's only my opinion. The OP can always have a look and make up his own mind. The 10 day 'on approval' is there on the front of the catalogue and as I said when I returned a coin there was no problem.

I have had so many bad reports of over grading even from dealers/forum members. Each to their own. If you are happy with your deals keep going back.

I put in a low bid for a VF - EF Spade Guinea, at one of Australia's leading auction houses. I was fortunate enough to win it.
The Spade Guinea is a very important piece of early Australian numismatic history, because it is mentioned in an early Proclamation of the New South Wales Colony, to be officially recognised as legal tender. The Guinea circulated alongside the famous Spanish 'Pieces of Eight', and continued until about 1825, when products of the Great Recoinage replaced them, and became Australia's only official coinage.

Ask yourself if you are willing to accept a jewelry coin. I own four guineas myself and the first one I bought was once part of a necklace.
