Fighting scene The Romans where fighters, the heroic emporer, a battle scene or sports. I think many of you do have such a scene. 1) at most two entries per member 2) host may enter but cannot win 3) voting as usual, gold = 3, silver = 2, bronze = 1 4) voting is open to anyone -- you do not have to enter a coin to vote. 5) 3-point bonus to anyone with under 100 posts at the time of entry 6) 3-point bonus to anyone who has not entered a Smackdown before (tell us so we can credit you) The example here is not eligible because I am the host. Someone has to...but I thought Id mix up this FEL TEMP entry. FEL TEMP REPARATIO overstruck on an earlier coin of a victory advancing left. Original legend unreadable, overstruck legend, where on flan, is lower case for some reason. I believe the original coin to be Constantine II/Constans and the overstruck design to be Constantius Gallus. Why an unofficial mint overstruck an official coin is a mystery to me. EDIT: Wrong photos!

That's an interesting Fallen Horseman, looks like a Barbaric Imitation.

Numerian AntoninianusObv:â€" IMP C NVMERIANVS AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right Rev:â€" PACATO-R ORBIS, Emperor advancing right, holding shield and sword, captive, cowering beneath Minted in Lugdunum (C in exe) Emission 9 Officina 3. Summer A.D. 284 Reference:â€" Cohen 41 (30 F). Bastien 618 (2 examples). The ONLY coin to show this reverse type in the entire Imperial series. A rare reverse type with all known examples coming from the same die pair (I know that Ed has a great example). How undignified of an emperor to be using a sword rather than spearing an enemy from horseback and then trampling him underfoot...

A nice little barbaric FEL TEMP!
And I like the irony...'PACATOR ORBIS'. Bring peace by slaughtering everything that doesn't agree with you.

Ed. I have been wondering this myself for the last few. Participation on this board in general is quite slow at present but the smackdowns certainly don't seem to capture the interest that they have in the past.

Here is a second entry. This time a far more appropriate way for an emperor to be seen kiling his foes. Probus Antoninianus Obv:â€" IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, Radiate and cuirassed bust left wearing imperial mantle and holding eagle tipped scepter Rev:â€" VIRTVS PROBI AVG, Emperor galloping right, spearing enemy whose shield lies beneath horse Minted in Serdica (KADelta in exe) Emission 4 Officina 4. A.D. 277 Reference:â€" RIC 877 var. Bust type H. (RIC does not list this entry with this bust type)

The shield in mid air is a nice touch. From the safe distance of 17 Centuries it is a rather cold comment about someone getting impaled. We sometimes forget that people getting their just rewards was a 'nasty' business.

I don't think it's run it's course just yet. Maybe we need to be a little less specific and more general. The current topic is a good topic, but out of all my coins the only ones that I have that fit it are the Fallen Horseman series. We have several new members here that have not been able to post anything yet. If we got back to basic coins such as, your favorite emperor, favorite ancient coin, etc... We might get more entries. I've enjoyed this thread and hope that it will continue.

This result is very poor . Now I really think the Smackdown is over to many words and less pics. I suggest no voting ( sorry Martin )

No problem. I don't have any ideas for any subsequent Smackdowns at the moment anyway.
