okie-colin Pillar of the Community United States 1083 Posts	Posted 05/17/2007 9:42 pm Well folks I have just concluded a pretty good buy on ebay for a 1817 - 13 Star LCent. It isn't as good a coin as the one that was swiped, but I am satisfied. It is a VF-20 Brown with what looks like just a tiny hint of porosity in one area of the obverse and no other problems. I don't think I am going to become jaded as a result of this experience, but I find myself starting to feel some anger. I won't ever have anything to do with this pathetic individual again. His loss is much larger than mine in my opinion. He has a large horde of old silver coins that he brags that he swiped when he was a youth working in a summer job at the coin rolling operation of a local bank. No one supervised him in the basement of the bank and he would just take out of the loose change any 90% silver that he wanted. It was sporadic enough that it never threw the total count off by enough to draw attention. How much more of a clue did I need? Man am I dumb. I consider this episode finished. He never replied to my email asking him if he ever found a large cent for his collection so I am sure he knows that I am aware of what he did. To reach the age where you are retired from a good job, eligible for social security and still be a petty thief is just pathetic! Thanks for all the replies! Report this Post to the Staff

Reading about your new 1817 made me get out my large cents and rediscover how cool they are. I think its time to find my old copy of Penny Whimsy and read it again this weekend. What's worse is he doesn't share this as a bad mistake of his past. He brags about it? You know, I had a slight hint of question in my mind as to whether or not he actually did it. okie-colin Pillar of the Community United States 1083 Posts	Posted 05/18/2007 12:34 am My favorites in the coppers are the draped bust half and large cent. I guess I am fortunate he took this one. I had four coronet type large cents in the box and I think he ignorantly thought they were duplicates rather than different types and that I wouldn't miss it. The 1817 was one of the first old coppers that I acquired and I had looked forward to placing it in the Dansco 7070. I paid around $35 for it around six years ago and it was XF and still had some mint luster. It would cost in excess of $200 to get a similar one today. When I get the replacement back in the album I am going to photograph it and post the pictures of the entire complete 7070 Type Set. It has been a great undertaking of time and money to acquire all these coins. Report this Post to the Staff
