British Celtic coin resources.

I realise there aren't many collectors in such a specialist area, but maybe this list will help others to become interested.

Introductory books and web sites
Celtic Coinage in Britain - Philip De Jersey (£5 - 10 secondhand)
The perfect 50 page read, with plenty of black and white images.

Best value for colour images:
The Tribes & Coins of Celtic Britain - Rainer Pudhill & Clive Eyre (£15-25 new)
Good colour pictures, with accompanying descriptions and historical context.

Those two books alone will give you a good overview of Celtic coinage without costing a fortune.

Online introductory material
Zero cost, and maybe not quite as relaxing as a good book, but both authors certainly know their stuff:

For identification
Ancient British Coins - Elizabeth Cottam, Philip de Jersey, Chris Rudd (aka 'ABC')
The most comprehensive set of British Celtic coin images - good sized images but only in black and white.
Complete with description and rarity. It also had a good introduction, and vital cross-referencing to BMC, VA and Spink.
It's also relatively modern - 2010.

Celtic Coinage of Britain - R. D. van Arsdell (aka 'VA')
In tandem with ABC above you should be able to identify nearly all British Celtic coins, and some French/Gaulish ones too. It also covers the problem of forgeries. Van Arsdell also has a website - see below.

This is the majority of van Arsdell's book online, as far as I can tell - bar the introduction.
There's also a vast number of his articles there too, and more up-to-date details on forgeries.

I happened upon a very interesting & nicely illustrated website (pdf file) today that discusses astronomical symbols on Roman coinage of the Imperial Period up to 96 AD.

This is an Excellent Reference about the coins of the crusades and it gives the history as well. Excellent!

This reference (link initially provided by antwerpen) came up recently in a thread on this forum regarding a medieval coin of Flanders.

Victor Gaillard, Recherches sur les Monnaies des Comtes de Flandre (1857).

It covers the period from Charles le Chauve (840 a.d.) to the end of the reign of Louis de Maele (1384). 28 plates with images of the types, though the detail seen online leaves something to be desired.
