By the time Claudius invaded the UK, the republican denarius was loooong gone - especially old ones like this. which is why its special that these have been found in the UK - it must have circulated for well over 100 years or it would have been carried over by the troops of Julius Caesar. This ones in terrible shape but for the price I cant complain. anyone good at IDing these? Got a time period? UK found...republican denarius fourree...so what did I pay? Take a guess. Ben Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 4208 Posts	Posted 05/17/2013 4:33 pm Its interesting that they dont command much price in the UK. The ones found in the UK are, by and large, worn smooth. Most legend is gone, all details destroyed by time. The ones I've seen sell have sold cheaper than they would have been had they been found in france just because these never a nice one found over here. This one was a couple of quid. I think I'm going to try and reconnect the two parts - use some playdough or some bluetac to form a bridge and block out the ugly bits. Report this Post to the Staff

For me, impossible to figure out who the moneyer was, not enough detail left on the coin in this regard. That information is usually behind Roma's head, or in the exergue on the reverse. Might be fouree, but I have a suspicion that it may not be. Looks like silver crystallization has got right into the core of this one. If that is the case, at least this proves it is from ancient times. You need centuries under normal conditions for silver crystallization to progress. Ben Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 4208 Posts	Posted 05/18/2013 04:45 am Some information about where it was found: Found around winchester which was a settlement in the iron ages but abandoned pre-roman occupation. after this, the Belgae established their capital here in roman Britain around 70AD as a major trading settlement. However, it could also have been carried there earlier by the troops of Aulus Plautuis as they invaded from either sides of the isle of wight. Found around the site of roman Venta Belgarum (modern Winchester). Most likely dropped after 70AD after circulating at least 100 years. I think this is a fourree - you can see some degraded green bits which seem to be cuprous. Report this Post to the Staff
