Has Anyone here bought from APMEX.com? I'm thinking about buying 3, 1 0z silver coins from them , 1 oz Silver American Eagle at 27.94 per coin. I know it's over spot value which is at $22.55 right now but seems like a good deal. What are your thoughts on the price of the coins they sell in general or specifically. Can you share you're experiences with them? ~ Joe *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I have bought plenty from APMEX over the last few years. In my experience, the GOOD news is that they are very reliable, they ship quickly when they say they will, and they pack securely. They also have a huge inventory and are a great place to look for specialty items you might not be able to find elsewhere. The BAD new is simply that their premiums tend to be significantly higher than some other online dealers such as Goldmart or Provident Metals, and their shipping fees aren't all that cheap either. If you want reliability and selection, go with APMEX. If you want to save some money and don't mind a longer wait for shipping and/or reduced selection, you might want to look elsewhere.

Thanks BarryG I'll look at Goldmart and Provident Metals. Price is a big factor for me so I'll go with them assuming I find what I need. thanks for clearing this up.

I have been very happy with my purchases from APMEX, also had good transactions with Provident. I tried Goldmart recently and while I eventually got my orders I did have issues with one order and I can't say I could recommend their customer service. For small orders from APMEX you may want to look at their Bullion Center on ebay, they discount shipping for multiple items.

I only have two complaints about APMEXThe first is theyre really slow to ship which isn't that unusual. The second (which is really the bigger issue) is that no matter how small your order is shipping will start at 16 dollars which really makes smaller orders from them cost prohibitive. I like Provident metals better, their prices are better especially on the eagles which theyre selling for 27.50 (under 27 if you pay cash/bank wire) and their shipping is cheaper too for small orders.

It is odd to me - but if you go to their ebay website you'll find the prices a little higher - and the shipping a lot lower.

BB if you order on ebay I think shipping is usually $4.95 for the first item and I think $1 each additional item. Personally I have found them to always ship very quickly so far.

Doug I think the higher prices are in part due to PayPal fees but I don't know if that account for all of the difference or not. Probably best to compare ebay prices to CC prices. Defintiely would price things on both ebay and website with shipping to figure out which is best for you.

I found this site from google.com/shopping. http://www.gainesvillecoins.com/cart.aspx But for bank wire its a $2000 minimum order and shipping is 12 dollars for any amount it seems. I did up to 8 which wasn't too bad but Provident seems to beat them out because they wanted 9 dollars in shipping for 8 silver 1 0z coins. Also, the shipping is over 4 weeks it looks like for gainesvillecoins.com ~ Joe

The guys who own Gainesville have an interesting history. Google "Gainesville Coins reviews," do your homework and exercise caution. There have also been previous mentions here of the quality of the products Gainesville sends out, what their attitude toward returns is and how they treat their customers. Use the search feature in this forum. You'll find that not everybody is in love with Gainesville because of the treatment they've been accorded by Gainesville.

Stay away from gainsville coins, I cannot emphasize that enough. They have a long history of sending out fakes, garbage damaged products, and ripping people off and saying to bad not their problem. Every review sites you go to they get horrible reviews and its not just a handful either and thats not even getting into their past company scandal.
I would pay Apmexs shipping price 100 times out of 100 before I ever ordered from Gainsville again

Thanks for the warning basebal, sound like they don't deserve any business.

I started out trying APMEX and after 8 orders have no desire to chance it with other vendors. These guys seem very legit to me, ship products when they say they will, have a nice variety with items actually on hand, a return/exchange policy and great customer service. They also accept a variety of payment methods and offer a discount for cash type (non credit card) payments. The cons are their product prices tend to be higher (but not always when they have items on special) and their starting shipping fee isn't good if you just want a few low dollar items. However, if you buy say a monster box of silver eagles, their shipping fee of $24.95 (insurance included) is lower than other vendors.

Thanks westcoasting, I'll keep their specials in mind. Yeah they all seem to only offer great prices when you buy a ton.

After many buys from APMEX over the last couple decades, they totally messed up a recent order. I ordered a roll of Barber half dollars and instead received a roll of common, circulated Ike dollars. How do you make a mistake like that? I had to take my time and go to UPS to return, and had to pay out of my pocket for UPS box $8.11. NEVER AGAIN will I purchase from APMEX.
