For the budget of an 11 year old that's a great coin! Until my late teens all I bought was junk, looks like your son is off to a good start in realizing that it is more fun to collect quality over quantity.

I second Joe's post. Your son is FAR ahead of where I was at that age. I'm torn between vg10 and f12....

B1, R1, by the way. I have it as (generously) G-6; not enough LIBERTY to go higher.

I keep telling him the same thing. Accumulate quality looking problem free coins. That way you will never regret a purchase, you will enjoy owning it and if you ever need to liquidate, you will be more likely to sell at a desirable price. I didn't have my first CBQ until after I was married. I think I have created a monster. I need to have him do my negotiating at shows. He got this coin show a couple months ago for $40.

G-6 obverse, VG-8 reverse = G-6 overall.

This is an 11 year old's coin? WOW!

This young man is so far ahead of anyone I've ever known as far as U.S. coin collecting!!

I will show him all your comments. He is proud of this coin. I remember trying to "will" my coins to be a higher grade by looking at them over and over when I was his age. He is doing a little of that right now. He wants it to be a VG-8. That's not a stretch, but I give it a G-6. I'm a mean old Dad. He bought it as a good for $40, which I thought was a steal. I was gonna buy it if he didn't. Thanks for your comments.

No dad is mean who shares the hobby with his son.
A gosh darn nice looking coin.

In no was it a mistake to buy on a limited budget.
G-6. Does it matter really?
Lots of VG coins look a lot worse!
Teach the lad about "eye appeal."

Perhaps it comes to him instinctively.
