I could really use assistance on good places to purchase authentic coins. I am a silver stacker so I'm tending to want to focus on the silver ones but any sound place will do. I know everybody uses ebay but as a newbie and not knowing anything I really shy using that because of the fakes. I would not know a fake from a real one at this point. Just looking for reasonable priced and authentic. Any recommendations?

Mint products always pops up when I type in the search engine. Any good? Others? Thanks for the help!

You can try http://www.altainumis.com/index.html
I'm still putting coins up but they're all genuine and reasonably priced.
Should be fully functional in a day or two.

Not all ebay sellers are risky as far as ancients go. Without even mentioning the 'charlatans' you are asking your question to ...... There are some large volume dealers who use ebay to keep the inventory moving ! These fellows list and sell hundreds if not thousands of coins each month. They are the best way for a 'newbie' to browse and learn by reading the descriptions. If you stick to a few BIG dealers for now you can enjoy the fun of bargain hunting in the thousands of auctions they list. If money is no object then the fixed price is okay. In 12 years I have bought one fixed price ancient. From our good 'amigo' Antonio in Spain. He is exceptionally reliable.

Thank you all that post. I'm keeping all the links that are posted so I have places to look around. Like most of us my money doesn't grow on a tree but I will pay for a quality product at a fair price. I just believe in the saying "pay yourself first" so instead of banking the extra in savings I could buy a few quality coins.

I bought a few uncleaned lots with mixed results that will take me months if not years to ID and as you know they are picked over anyways.

Thank you for the links from all of you.

Yeah a lot of the coins I buy are on the Bay but I just generally stick to people I know are dealers. People like Antonio (Lucernae) like FR mentioned are often on there. The one seller I talked to used to be on vcoins but left when there was a change in ownership that he didn't agree with.

ebay isn't a horrible place for ancients and it is fairly easy to recognize the guys who move a lot of coins through it.

Also a quick google search usually leads to a fair amount of links if the dealer is well recognized. The rule for me is if anything smells fishy with a dealer on ebay I don't bother bidding. There are thousands of other coins out there and I don't have to have any coin that much unless it is ultra rare but any ultra rare coin that is in my price range probably isn't that legitimate in the first place ;)

Since you are starting out with ancient coins, it is best to buy from VCoins or Forum to start with, that way you can be sure that what you are buying is genuine and has been verified as such.
Once you gain experiance with what a real ancient AE or Silver (or if your pockets are deep, Gold) typically looks like, you will find reliable sellers on ebay.
For example, Dr. Hubert Lanz (Numismatik Lanz: http://www.numislanz.com/) sells also on ebay (http://myworld.ebay.com/numismatikl...047675.l2559) and I have been able to buy some fantastic and rare Roman coins from his ebay auctions.

Yeah I just bought an awesome 15th century coin from Lanz. It gets here surprisingly fast from Germany.
