I'm thinking of purchasing this one for the type set. This is the best the seller could do on the pictures. Said it has a light gray toning. I think it'll grade AU50. Asking price is $189 Most of the bust Half Dimes I came across are very darkly toned so I'm very tempted to go for this. I appreciate your thoughts on this. Thank you.

I like it at that grade and price, as long as the surfaces are original. I pulled it in to the Gimp and played with colors and levels a bit, and it seems promising.

Thank you all. I'm going to go ahead with it. I'll post pictures when I have it in hand. The seller also said its a rarity-3 die marriage. While I do know what R3 means I have no idea what a die marriage is.

"Die marriage" refers to the particular combination of obverse and reverse dies used to strike that particular coin. Many relatively low-mintage coins like the one you're buying have had such exhaustive research done on them that all the dies used to strike them have been identified and cataloged.

Thanks...they don't have to be Half Dimes, they could be dimes, or quarters, or half dollars, or...or...man I wish the lottery would get the numbers right this week so I can afford all the coins I want!

Guess I'm the only one, but this coin looks dipped to me. The heavy marks on the cheeks and wear on the feathers also seem to indicate more circulation than an AU would show. Note the remaining tone in the U. Course cleaning doesn't rule it out necessarily, but I always like a natural look. Not sure about this one.

I will definitely post a picture when I received it. Seller said it has a light gray tone so maybe the color is off in the picture.

Needless to say I'm not good at taking pictures. This is the best I could do. It looks original to me. Steel color.

Nice crusty original patina It looks much better in your pics, the seller pics look pale and dipped- must be funky lighting. Nice strike too with the fully formed stars and definitely a solid AU coin
