Th first thing that struck me about this coin was the blatant porosity of the obverse. And no, it's not the photography. The reverse shows none of it; it's PMD. There is no way this coin slabs as Original Surfaces. That makes the price high, and it will forever annoy you to look at. It's rare, but not unknown. There will be another.

Walk past. This isn't the one to blow your budget on.

like I said, with a rare R5 coin why wouldn't they want to have it slabbed and graded. i'll tell you why...they know it will come back as detail grade.

And here's my advice. Save first, then shop. For two years I kept to a budget and bought only a couple of buffaloes and one Morgan. Then I got my husband a $20 gold coin for his birthday -- because I saved for TWO YEARS. And it is NOT and investment because I doubt that he'd ever sell it unless he was desperate and desperate people don't get the full value because they have to sell in a hurry.


For me, going to coin shows is like visiting museums. I got to look and learn.

It's *nice,* probably high EF-AU Details, and that's near-Condition Census for the variety. As such, gut feeling is it's about a ~$1000 coin. This is truly a rarity, and even rarer with original surfaces. But the OP is a nut for this series, and even if the money were closer, I'd advise him to look elsewhere. This one would drive him around the bend.

Yeah, that, too, considering what probably originally accompanied the porosity.

I finally got to look at this coin of concern. When I used the magnification feature, it is really porous. And I can agree with others who mention that a coin of it's stature would need to be slabbed before I dropped any money on it.

I also caught up on the other posts after my last one (woo-saa), Dave pretty much said the same thing...pass.
