In the spirit of Guess the Emperor, we turn our attention to the Gods,Goddesses and Deities of times long ago. For the ancient coin collector the ability to recognize the Gods is crucial. Many of the Gods are beautifully depicted on ancient coinage. I could think of no better opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Gods and their many forms.

Rules:
1)Have fun.

2)Use whatever coin you like. (Preferably one with enough photographic detail)

3)Try and use native name and God. Reveal the coin but not the name of the god as the first clue of ID.

4)The first person to guess the god correctly selects the next God to be shown. If the person declines he or she may pass the honor to another person.

Enjoy`

Certainly looks 'Eastern'. What he has over his shoulder I am clueless. I will 'guess' Syria/Assyria and the only deity I can think of would be Baal. But that seems a stretch.

This does look like fun, but I'm going to have to just watch for now since I know nothing about these-- but I look forward to learning and to buying some of my own. This will give me a good preview of what's out there, so thanks!

Can anyone point me to a site which lists the various gods and deities found on ancient coins?

There are so many great coin books in Dutch, German and French (Dang Europeans), some have not been reprinted in English.
