I could see people's concern about hands if this was some super rare condition specimen MS-67, but when the coin appears to have been run over by a dump truck on one side, I think it's ok. :) It's not like it's going to melt or anything, plus it's obvious it's been handled by 1000's of hands already. Great pickup btw, cool coin.

far from choice but runover by a dump truck is a little exaggerated.in fact it looks pretty nice in hand for the grade.reduce the zoom on your screen to 30% to give a better idea of the in hand look

That's why I'm starting to like ancient coins. I have no compunction about touching and handling them. It's even acceptable to clean them!

And stringboogie-- nice coin!

i agree 100% youre holding in your hand a piece of history that many people held so long ago (maybe even one of the founding fathers! ) I would have done the same thing without even hesitating

in fairness the thumb on the face was somewhat careless and certainly not a daily routine but there was adrenalin flowin as it had just came in the mail when I pictured it.the worst part here is between this and another purchase from the recent Goldberg auction I'm gonna need to sell some coins to balance the books and the next question is,should I subscribe to an ebay store to save on fees now or pay all I can on em till fall,then open an ebay store?this is a sickness you know

Hi JimmyCC

I have stolen copied the information below shamelessly from 1793chaincent.org

Quote:
The Chain Cent was supposedly designed by Henry Voigt although facts are scarce. As mandated by law, a visual representation of Liberty was portrayed on the obverse. The reverse featured a chain of fifteen links, representing each of the states in the Union at the time. The chain had been intended to indicate the strength of the Union, however some members of the public drew other connotations. Even in the late 18th century slavery was an issue in the United States, and the reverse design served as an unintended reminder of this. The representation of Liberty on the obverse was also criticized for its execution and her demeanor.

While production was halted because of the copper shortage, a new design was prepared and would be introduced when production resumed. Despite its brief run, the Chain Cent holds an important place in the history of American numismatics and continues to captivate collectors.

They are rare and I believe the first coin minted by the US government (someone correct me if I am wrong).

Stringboogie has more guts than I do...the most I gamble with is $10.

EDIT: So stolen is not a good description since the information is still on their site.

A big congrats on this acquirement! Not everyone can say that they have one of these in their collection!

Be sure that you place her in the "The 65 Days of Half AND Large Cents!!" thread;
