And recall, the $2 is the only small-size note to have had a major design change before the "big head" era, when the Signing of the Declaration was substituted for Monticello.

Yes, and I wish that the reverse design had gone back to the Monticello reverse with the Series 1995, after the Series 1976 "Bicentennial" reverse of the $2 bill were used. Just like how the quarter, the half and the Ike went back to their traditional eagle reverse designs, I would have loved to have seen the Monticello reverse return with Series 1995 and beyond. I don't know why so many people think that the "Signing of the Declaration of Independence" reverse was so great. It IS my favorite "current" design, but my favorite design on the $2 bill was the Monticello reverse, second only to the last $500 bill's centered oval with large numeral 500 on the reverse.

If we were to revive the higher-denomination notes, I'd like to see the "denomination backs" replaced with the historical scenes. I want to see that "Washington resigning his commission", from the $1000 First Charter National Currency, in circulation!

Honestly, I think we've gotten to the point now of dropping even the $2 note in favour of a coin. And I'd introduce a half-eagle (possibly silver-clad?) but let it co-circulate with the paper. But sweeping reform of the coin & currency system is quite another topic.

One problem with Dollar Bill Acceptors is that they are too much like collectors. They tend to like only the high quality bills. Trying to get them to take a dog eared VG is sort of like trying to get the dog off the couch without getting growled at.

Speaking of bleaching one of the reasons they put in the security strip before the 1996 redesign was that U.S.A. had the same type of block on the $1 note AND the $100 note so the fakers had one less area to cover when trying to add zeros to the note. The bigger problem of course was that they did not work for Alan Greenspan then it would have been perfectly legal.
