Time for some stats!! I have kept some records on the coins I have found (like where, how many, types found etc) for this year. This year I have looked through $6980 worth of 50c coins and found 4 millennium incused flag coins. So roughly 1 for every 3500 coins searched. I generally search 20c coins more ($13420 worth this year). If anyone is interested in more info let me know Ben

The Royal Australian Mint has advised that it did have two Master Tools for the reverse of the 2000 Millennium 50 cents. It said the incised flag version was for production (circulation) coins while the incused flag version was intended for the collector (mint set) coins. It said late in production the incused flag reverse was used to produce 1-2% of production coins. On further questioning, RAM revealed no mint set coins were struck with the incused flag version (reason not given even though that reverse was suppose to be for this purpose). Of the over 16,500,000 circulation coins struck ONLY around 200,000 have the incused flag. It becomes a rather scare coin indeed especially in near UNC condition. Recent auctions on ebay Australia have seen the incused flag variety fetch between $300 and $500. It maybe this reverse was a pattern die, an early design, superceded by the incised flag design but somehow it was used for limited production. It is difficult to get any information or verification if the Mint makes a mistake so we may never know the full picture. We can be very grateful that the RAM revealed this much information about this coin.

I was wondering if anybody has had any luck find more incuse flags? I haven't been able to search much lately myself but when I have they seem to be harder to find (probably because people know they are out there). I currently have 10 I think. How are other forum members going? Is there anybody else searching?

G'day, I need better eyes. I retain all my Millenium 50c, which isn't many, and one day, I'll gird my loins and check them very carefully. But, at 1~2%, I doubt if I've got enough to justify any realistic optimism. Coin-collecting can be character-building. Peter in Darwin
