G'day Bryan, the Grand Final is in Melbourne on the last Saturday in September. This weekend, four teams compete , in what we call "Preliminary Finals", for the right to run on to the Melbourne Cricket Ground on the 29th. This year, the finals have been very good matches. I am sure that this will continue.
The Oz 1982 50-cent includes images of various sportspersons, and was issued to commemorate the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane that year. Australian football is neither an Olympic nor a CG sport. However, one of the engravers at the Mint recognized the injustice of this, and he put two footballers on the coin: and he got away with it !
You will note that I got your question about "footy" back to the topic of 50-cent coins.
By the way: three retired Oz footballers have been recruited by American teams. Some Australian footballers can consistently kick goals from 60 metres (66 yards).

Go the mighty Magpies (Collingwood) in the AFL. Footy is one of the greatest games on earth. Can be fairly brutal injury wise though. I play local footy these days (tired out/practice matches with a few AFL clubs) and hurt my knee the last game before the finals. My team won the permiership. I am out of 'active' sport for 12 months due to the knee injury. Some of the other injuries on the list include 16 concussions (only one this year), broken ankle, cracked jaw 3 times, broken nose, numerous broken/dislocated fingers, chipped teeth, numerous bruised/cracked ribs, stress fractures in my back and shins, various cuts and bruises etc (a few stitches). They are just the ones I can remember now, I'm sure there are lots more.
Anyway, back to coins again. I will be having a bit of a search again later today I think. If I do I'll let you know how I go!

OK we will keep it semi on topic I'll come out of the closet I am a Aussie Rules sanctioned Umpire and will be attending the US Nationals in October in Louisville KY. But not before going to grand Finals night party which will start on September 28 here in the US with a televised kick off at about 1 am to celebrate here is the latest Footy coin To clarify the footy sport for those who don't know it if you were to rate sports by speed and roughness it would go something like this: Soccer (known as football to the rest of the world) Grid Iron (American football), Rugby League, and then Australian Rules (known as footy) Broward County Florida, is currently building the first US combination Cricket, Rugby League, Australian Rules, Stadium, Our local team will be the Aussie Rules Home team Fighting Squidsbut to bring this back to a coin topic there is also the Rugby world cup coin now being offered

Well the mighty Magpies just got pipped at the post, i.e. lost . On the other hand I had a look through $200 worth of 50c pieces the other day and found another incuse flag. So up to 11 in total now!

G'day from Darwin, got a $10-bag of 50-cent coins from my a bank a week ago finally sorted it, and there were a couple of Milleniums. Now, I've never really had a clear idea about what I was looking for; and the pics on the internet didn't leave me much wiser, but I noted that another collecter had said "when you see the incuse next to the normal, under magnification, you'll have no doubt". Thankyou that collector, you were correct. Anyway, I've now got my first Incuse Flag: cost me 50 cents. It's very circulated, but still good enough to put in a 2x2. Re-reading the previous posts in this thread: I was way off the mark with my AFL tipping ... Peter

Well done Peter! I've found 5 from circulation, they're all fairly well used, but like you said, they only cost 50¢. Can't knock that.

No luck, went through all the 8 that I have and none of them are incursive. I believe I can form the letter "curse" out of incursive.

I have only found one incuse flag in the last $5000 worth of coins I have searched through. They seem to be getting very rare and hard to find lately!
