Common on 2012 toonies. Since the mint started printing on the edge of the coin. Each mark on the rim will line up with a letter on the edge.

This type of condition was featured in the premium coin newspaper (the one that is often used for trends) in their errors column. It was listed by an eBayer for a significant premium.

My head was spinning when I saw that newspaper column endorse such a condition as an error. I am learning about coins but I have seen too many of these types of toonies to even see any worth talking about it.

It is a production problem, not an error. Also, I chuckled with the figure caption of possibly finding blank planchets with edge lettering. That would be impossible with twoonies, as the two pieces that comprise the twoonie are separate pieces that are assembled in the striking chamber (the 1996 German planchets would be the exception). While you can find twoonies struck only with the core in the striking chamber, to date there is no known ring struck without a core...

But, I digress. We should be very careful when criticizing that particular columnist and questioning his expertise , we would not want our opinions to be cut and pasted into printed form...
