Nice coin, I am having trouble seeing why ICCS only called that one MS-63...

Thanks SPP...That 1882 is truly immaculate and I think that I just gave ICCS too many pieces to do at one time. Even their eyes ...just got tired...as they moved things along too quickly. All of mine were done in one shot back in the 90's. Others here have stated that ICCS were very conservative back then. But where does that leave me now...? I feel screwed when I see postings here of "some" of the 63's,..or 64's and 65's of today's graders... . . Here's an 1875 of mine ...but with older pics that are not perfectly focused...   . . . . . Strange that so few of the many dealers or collectors here have anything to offer ........... Here's a nice 1945 nickel...but without the typical weakness in the eyebrow.. . . Question for the nickel experts .... Most of my nicer George VI nickels show a weakness(ie: not fully filled out) on the eyebrow even though they seem to be very choice pieces. Is this the norm for that series of nickel.?. All comments appreciated ... . .   |

Could it be the composition of the metal in the coin that contributes to the weakness of the strike? (nickel vs. chrome plated steel vs. tombac)? Also I would imagine the age/wear of the die would contribute.
Although upon further investigation it seems that chromium is an extremely hard metal, much harder than nickel. So I'm a little confused and also curious. Someone will know I'm sure.

Geo 5th 5 cents in nickel tend to be weakly struck. The reason for this is simple. Die life. When using the hard metal nickel, to achieve a full strike shortens a die life drastically.

The dies were chrome plated, after 1942, to try and extend their useful life... during the war years, I suspect many dies were pushed right to the very end of their useful life.
