Quote: BTW- by introducing people to ancient coins, your making it tougher for us bottom feeders. You know more fish in pond, more competition. Then we'd better shut down this forum

It is indeed true - the more people know about it, the less I can afford. I'm havinh to shell otu a LOT for coins these days - been a while since I've got an uncleaned lot.

not knowing the person, but if they are of a certain religious persuasion, you way want to angle that way. like adding in a nice judean coin, or a a byzantine christ coin may mean more to some people....a cool islamic coin or something with shiva may mean more to others.
here's what i'd get someone I didn't know that just gave me 3000 bucks to get ancient coins...i'll assume they don't really know anything about ancients, just want some cool conversation pieces. but i'd try to connect with something they know or something that is cool regardless.
greek: must have an alexander the great coin, who doesn't know that guy?
how about a giant ptolemy coin? don't know who the guy is...don't matter, who doesn't like giant coins?
throw in a indo-greek square....never heard of bactria?..squares are still pretty neat.
roman: have they seen the "rome" series? did they love it?
julius c., augustus, mark anthony legion coin, pompey.
have they watched gladiator 1000 times: aurulian and commudus coin.
never seen that stuff? julis c, augustus, nero, caligula, constantine.
get a byzantine cup coin: my wife couldn't care less about coins, but a byzantine trachy on my desk stopped her in her tracks...she thought it was neat as heck.

chrsmat and RVFVS, great suggestions.
I could try for (some of) the 12 Caesars. Started looking at prices for them yesterday. Hmm. Maybe I'll just look one or two of the more familiar names-- Augustus, Nero, Caligula.
He's Catholic-- might be intrigued by some coins with religious connections. But for him, trumping that is value and desirability to other people. Fortunately most coins with any biblical ties carry a premium because others seek them out too. So those could be good for his little coin portfolio. Maybe a Pontius Pilate prutah.
He did see my two huge Ptolemeic Zeus Ammons and was amazed at their low price and massive size. So that's on the list.
I think he should definitely have an ATG tet since it's so classic, recognizable, and popular. Maybe an Athenian owl or Julius Caesar.
I hadn't thought of a trachy. Yeah, maybe one of those because they look so different.
Maybe one of something from Lydia or Lesbos for the 'really really old' factor.
$3000 sounds like a lot but it could buy one really good coin (although most of the 'really good' coins I am attracted to cost more than that) or small assortment of popular classics. I'm leaning towards the latter.
On a personal collecting note, I sure am finding a lot of Trajan coins which are interesting. I see getting more of his issues in the future. Elagabalus too.

Oh, and the Bactrian square coins-- good idea. I've been keeping an eye out for some for me. Maybe I'll buy a small lot of them and put one or two in his pile. Most of them I find are not not in great condition but then they are not very expensive :)

Aww Chris now you went and did it... You reminded her about the square coins...you neglect to tell her that the most desirable ones are good condition with full legends and made of fine silver...most bronzes are beat because of the environment. You might want to consider a large elephant bust of Demetrios I of Bactria, rare, kinda pricey and majestic.

I'd LOVE to get one of those Demetrios I elephant scalp bust coins. Been keeping an eye out for them ever since I posted one on GTE. Very expensive though.
And Nate... those square bronze coins have been on my mind since I first saw them. Been watching for the right ones and have my eye on many right now. There are frequently small lots of them at auctions. Will probably snatch some up soon :)
Haven't seen any in silver though. Thanks for the heads-up. Will start the quest.

ANoob she probably saw them on one of your posts too so only you are to blame about getting her interested in them! That's right I went there.

Absolutely true. My interest in many coins is often the direct result of you guys posting your coins.
For instance, I thought the cow-riding-dolphin coin you posted was hilarious, Anoob. Now I want one.
Getting others interested is a GOOD thing. The value of your less popular coins goes up when other people start wanting them.
Anoob is very smart, seeking out more obscure and less pricey coins at this point in time. Amass them, post them here, show others how interesting they are, watch the value of your collection go up.
I'm just collecting what I find interesting. No particular goal in mind at this juncture. Well... a few minor goals here and there (like the Zeus Ammon necklace), but mostly just because it's fascinating.

This is going to be hard. I'm going to want to keep everything I buy. Picked up a few lots at auction today with the intent of putting them in his pile, already want to keep one of them. This one: Had some trouble with the connection to the auction house. Sometimes it froze up. That happened when the main coin I wanted was coming up. Missed it and it went for a really low price :(
