I am sure this is very minor for serious GB collectors, but I am trying to take my collection in a different direction. Not just United States sets. So I started some albums that hold 12 2X2's per page. For one page I want to put one of each Denomination of each GB coin (or just 12) so far I have, or plan to have. 1 - Farthing 2 - Half Penny 3 - Penny 4 - 3 pence 5 - 6 Pence 6 - Shilling 7 - Two Shilling 8 - Florin 9 - Half Crown 10 - Crown Here I have a question, are there any denomination I am missing ... that is easy to find, that I might be able to use without having to go with Half Sovereign and Sovereign?  Tomorrow I hope to pick up a Two Shilling and a Florin. I have a Churchill Crown .. but would like to find a silver one for that slot. |

Nice to see another British fan come aboard!
There are other denominations:
Bronze half, third and quarter farthing
silver Britannia Groat (fourpence)
silver One and a half pence.
Most of these circulated in the British colonies but some of them circulated on the Mother Country as well.
The silver Maundy 4d, 3d, 2d and 1d, but these were NCLT, handed personally out by the King or Queen or their appointed representative on Maundy Thursday, each year.
Most of these scarcer denominations, I believe, would be within your numismatic budget
It would certainly interesting to find out more about these, but I will leave that for your own numismatic entertainment A Google search would help. Have fun!

I am amazed with the Farthing...1/2 ....1/3....1/4
What would the need for a 1/4 Farthing be ..... yes I will have to read on that one

I like the 1&1/2d because of its name... "penny halfpenny"...
Apparently they saw most of their use on charm bracelets (because I guess, a coin using 1.5 or 3 is rarely used), so holed ones are easy to come by.
Maybe it would have found more love in the Soviet system, with 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 15 kopeks in normal use.

Another denomination not yet mentioned is the double-florin, or 4 shilling piece. Only issued for a few years (1887-1890), unpopular due to it's similar size to the crown (face value 5 shillings). Think of it as the British equivalent to the American 20 cent piece, only bigger... and cheaper. The two pence coin was also struck in 1797 as a giant bronze coin - the cartwheel tuppence. I am pretty sure I have a cartwheel penny .. very big and thick. I don't know why .. but I was thinking they were some sort of bank token. Would these be consider a different denomination .. then say the 1851 penny I have pictured? |

They were the same denomination - just different metals. Think of the way a thru'pence changed from silver to Brass or the florin changed from silver (0.5)to Cu-Ni.

I was going to add the groat (4d) and point out that a florin is 2/-
As for a silver crown, Ed VII or George V (avoiding the 'wreath' crowns) shouldn't be too expensive.

ALSO ON THE THREEPENCE OR THRU'PENNY....THERE WERE ACTUALLY TWO DIFFERENT ONES IN CIRCULATION AT THE SAME TIME IN THE 30S + 40S, THERE WAS A SILVER ONE THAT CEASED IN 1944, AND A BRASS ONE INTRODUCED IN 1939, TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT COINS BOTH OF WHICH ARE VERY EASY AND RELATIVELY CHEAP TO BUY. I do have quite a few 3 pence coins ... in fact somewhere I have a box that has most of a set of silver ones .. from mid 1800's to 1940's. I never checked them out but would guess I am missing the harder date coins. I am trying to stay with copper and silver coins .. although next time a gold half sovereign comes into my local shop I make pick that up for this page. I have stared these albums .. to put some fun back into my collecting. Today I picked up a 1889 Crown, it does have a rim ding, but they said I could trade it out when a better one comes in. I also picked up a 1942 Two shilling and a 1936 One Florin. And traded my Half Crown for a better grade one. I am guessing the two shilling and the florin have the same value, not sure why they are called different. Now my plan for this page will be 1 - Farthing 2 - Half Penny 3 - Penny 4 - 2 pence 5 - 3 pence 6 - 4 pence 7 - 6 Pence 8 - Shilling 9 - Two Shilling 10 - Florin 11 - Half Crown 12- Crown Leaving open swapping out the two shilling for a half sovereign. I now see on ebay I should be able to get a 2 and 4 pence coin at a good price. |

Ah yes, double florin -- the barmaid's grief. So said because many barmaids would give the bearer change from a crown, and owe the till a shilling.   Some 30 years ago, I bought this as a crown. Oh well, the seller was probably as ignorant as I was. |

The reverse looks like a old guy riding a horse .. riding over a dragon .. or something This might give me a different coin to use .. Am I right that a Florin and two Shilling are the same value? |

I did a couple searches also ..
Those proof only issue ... are pretty high ..
same with the double florin.
I see the Sovereign's once in a while .. I sure would like to see a Victoria 5 pound ...
