That leaves the possibility that you may have a genuine unplated cent error, better pictures would help to make that determination.

I found a 2011 Shield Cent in Jan. 2012. Here's the thread.

This coin appears to still have some cartwheel luster on it. Try and take some bigger photos if you can.

If there were no copper and it was just the zinc core it would weigh less than a real penny, correct? It doesn't. I took it to my physics class and it weighed exactly 2.5g. Plus, It couldn't have been plated, for if it had it would have weighed more than 2.5g.

You aren't taking the allowed tolerances into account. A copper plated zinc cent has a spec weight of 2.5 grams, but it has a +/- .1 gram tolerance So a cent right from the mint could weigh anywhere from 2.4 to 2.6 grams. Then when you consider that the weight of the copper plating is about .05 grams you can see that you could add or remove plating from a cent and still quite possibly have it weigh 2.5 grams. And if your scale isn't accurate to at least two decimal places it could be possible to weigh a cent, strip the plating and not have the weight of the coin change at all.

how do I quote?

Go to reply to topic, copy and paste what you want to quote, then select it and click the button on the format row that is the 2nd from the end. It looks like a piece of paper with a red arrow pointing to the right.

That penny is very interesting. My guess is like people said above it was struck on an unplated planchet.

Thanks!

I will work on getting better pictures later today. My sister took my camera back to college with her a couple days ago.

I can't tell from the pics, but by any chance is the surface pitted at all or is it smooth.

It's quite smooth everywhere. No pitting that I can see, and I did take my time and look closely.

P.S. Thanks to whoever moved this thread to attract more attention :)

George, go ahead and make a new topic, if you could post pictures that would help a lot in authenticating the coin

Looks like an un-plated planchet from what I can see. Here are a few images of other examples:

It looks real from what I can see.

Yes, please post a new thread rather than resurrecting one which is 18 months old. Your coin won't get the attention it deserves.
