You aren't taking the allowed tolerances into account. A copper plated zinc cent has a spec weight of 2.5 grams, but it has a +/- .1 gram tolerance So a cent right from the mint could weigh anywhere from 2.4 to 2.6 grams. Then when you consider that the weight of the copper plating is about .05 grams you can see that you could add or remove plating from a cent and still quite possibly have it weigh 2.5 grams. And if your scale isn't accurate to at least two decimal places it could be possible to weigh a cent, strip the plating and not have the weight of the coin change at all. George b New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 02/18/2015 2:22 pm I was just digging in my pocket and found a 1986 d penny that looks like steel so I came here and see that I'm not the only one .. after looking around the internet all the pennys I find like (that are not supposed to be this way) this are 1986 d , has anyone found out if it's a coincidence?
