Peter- just follow your love (some call it passion) and you'll be just fine. I discovered the amazing thrill of treasure hunting in coins when I was 7 years old, nearly 30 years later there's scarcely been a day that the subject didn't occupy my mind for too long!

Did you buy this on ebay? If so do you have a link? Just curious of the sellers description. This hobby is mostly about learning. Don't get discouraged. I love coin roll hunting and it has its highs and lows.

the sellers description never says it's an error or anything so its technically alright imo, I bet he was surprised to get so much for a vaguely described novelty coin started at $.99.

The reply from my friend, ANA Govenor, and past president of CONECA Michael Ellis (I left out my questions to him regarding this piece and some personal stuff from our email exchange) but here is the gist of his answer, condensed from two emails;

Yep, PMD. Easily done with many things of which a vice is one of them. Can be done with a carjack too! As for the "extra metal" " Cud like" area. That is the result of where the most pressure was exerted and how the coins were aligned when the pressure was applied. And notice how it is out of round as well. That is from uneven alignment and pressure. They were probably stacked perfectly one against the other but slid out of place when pressure was applied.

You are correct too, this is a very good learning tool.
--end reply--

I hadn't really noticed the coin being out of round, that would be something to look for right away too. Mike worked with the Gallery Mint Museum for awhile and defintely absorbed as much as he could on how coins are struck, they also purposely created mint errors to learn how certain errors were made at the mint, since the Gallery Mint used very similar techniques as the US mint did in the early days.

Thanks to Mike for his input on this coin. As always he is a very knowledgable error coin expert and shares his knowledge with the whole numismatic community. I've been trying to get him to join us here at CCF, but he is a busy guy!

Justin- I understand that the seller didn't list it as an error, but I would never feel comfortable selling an item like that. Someone could buy it and try to pass it off on another person. I haven't left feedback yet, still deciding on what I should put.

Westcoins and all who have taken the time to evaluate: I appreciate all of your expertise!! Thank you for helping me understand. I can't believe you got Mr. Ellis to respond and sorry about wasting his time! Please tell him thanks! This has been a great learning experience for me and I can honestly say, that feel comfortable in spotting the "vice" or "squeezed" coins now! Every experience is making me a better collector. I hope I didn't waste a lot of your time. Thanks again everyone!

Coinfox1. Guess, with a image of the Reverse, we can have a better opinion. Seem like a Die clash. Nice coin. Congratulations.

Sorry coinfox. I was reading only the first page. But yes; in the reverse is the answer of everything.

No worries, as I said Mike is a good friend of mine! He also says he doesn't mind helping out or teaching when he can, if you run into him at an ANA event go up and introduce yourself - you'll find that he is quite approachable, friendly and free to share knowledge about coins and errors.

That's just wrong!

That is why I kept it going for a bit, even if others were so quick to dismiss it as PMD, I thought the exact same thing myself, but used it as a learning tool for others to see just how a coin can end up looking like this. Even Mike agreed that it was a very good coin to share with others and use as teaching tool on faked mint errors, way too many people not only fall for them, but end up spending lots of money on junk. Glad the flow went towards the education I was pushing for rather than berating coinfox for or anyone else that thought or hoped it was real. Everyone can get burned and everyone can learn - it's all in how you open your mind!
